More than 2,000 amateur and professional athletes took the plunge into the 58 degree water of San Francisco Bay to compete in the 34th Annual Escape from Alcatraz™ Triathlon on Sunday, June 1, with Olympian Andy Potts from Colorado Springs, Colorado winning the prestigious race for the sixth time, setting a new record. First time Escapee, Olympian Sarah Haskins from Clermont, Florida, took the first place position amongst the women. Featuring a 1.5-mile swim from Alcatraz Island to the shore, an 18-mile bike ride and an eight-mile run through San Francisco, this race is considered one of the most difficult triathlons in the world.

“My race day started with an awesome swim, I was first out of the water and I never looked back until the finish line,” said 2014 Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon Winner Andy Potts. “I felt the pressure with such a great field of pros behind me, including Olympic Silver Medalist Bevan Docherty, and did not celebrate until I was in the finish shoot. Escape from Alcatraz is my favorite race in the world, and to return after being out due to an injury last year, and win it for the sixth time, is the best feeling ever.”
Racers from 16 to 76-years-old and a number of physically challenged athletes from Challenged Athletes Foundation participated in the triathlon. The notorious Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon attracted athletes from more than 40 countries, including top Beijing triathlete Qi Dang, who placed fifth in the 35-39 male division. Qi Dang will participate in IMG Worldwide’s Beijing International Triathlon, set to take place September 14, 2014.
