SAN FRANCISCO--()--Lumosity, the leading brain training and neuroscience research company, today announced that over the course of six years since launching its first suite of online games, it has reached over 50 million members, growing its user base about 200% year-over-year from 80,000 members in October 2007. To date, Lumosity’s games have been played over 1.1 billion times, averaging more than 1.7 million games played each day, contributing to Lumosity’s continuously growing database of human cognitive performance – the largest of its kind in the world.

“We founded Lumosity in 2005 with the intention of helping people live better lives, and we are proud to have created a product that resonates with millions of people from all different walks of life and from all around the world,” said Kunal Sarkar, co-founder and CEO of Lumosity. “A great deal of hard work has gone into making Lumosity the leading gym for the brain, and we look forward to continuing to grow the product, the mobile experience and our research efforts, to make Lumosity more fun, effective, engaging and accessible to our global user base.”

Since Lumosity’s first iPhone app launched in 2010, its mobile apps have been downloaded almost 25 million times overall. Both apps have been featured in the U.S. and U.K. Apple iTunes App Stores, and have reached No. 1 in the Apple iTunes App Store overall and No. 1 in the Education category in nearly 40 countries worldwide.

“The research we’re doing at Lumosity alongside our collaborators has the potential to advance our understanding of human cognitive performance,” said Michael Scanlon, co-founder and Chief Scientific Officer of Lumosity. “In 2005, I left a neuroscience Ph.D. program to co-found Lumosity, and it’s really exciting to see how far the research, as well as interest in cognitive training has progressed over the years.”

Today, according to ClinicalTrials.gov, there are 30 registered clinical trials on cognitive training, up from three in 2005. Lumosity’s research initiative, the Human Cognition Project (HCP), has seen a similar trajectory over the years, growing to include researchers at 34 universities working on 43 ongoing research projects thus far. In the past three years, seven Lumosity peer-reviewed papers have been published on topics ranging from the use of its database in neuroscience research to cognitive impairments in cancer patients. Current ongoing HCP research topics include investigating the effects of cognitive training on healthy adults, emotion regulation, decision-making, exercise, cancer, stroke, schizophrenia, ADHD, and other medical conditions.

Lumosity also has an education access and research program called the Lumosity Education Access Program (LEAP), which provides educators with free Lumosity subscriptions to students to study the effects of cognitive training in the classroom. The program began as a grassroots effort in 2008 in response to increased educator interest, and today reaches over 14,000 students in 500 classrooms worldwide.
