Mortenson Construction and Yahoo! Team Up to Give Back to Local Community

QUINCY, Wash.--()--Two champions of their industries, Mortenson Construction and Yahoo! Inc. (YHOO), recently teamed up to give back to the small community of Quincy, Washington. Leaders and teams from the two companies worked together to donate supplies and time to help build a new pergola for The Cambridge Assisted Living Facility for seniors. The project took six weeks to complete and was led by Mortenson Project Manager Paul Kivi, along with Jim McWiggins and Lisa Karstetter of Yahoo!.

The new pergola enhances the only outdoor living space at The Cambridge and gives the seniors who live there, and their guests, a way to enjoy the outdoors, even during the hot summer months. The community, located in central Washington near the Columbia River, reaches temperatures of over 100 degrees in the summertime, and the seniors desired an area to spend time outside.

The Cambridge, a not for profit, has 30 rooms and offers assisted living services for individuals who cannot reside on their own, but do not need the full-time health care services of a nursing home. The community was established in 1999 and provides residents with activities, beautician/barber, religious services, a garden, guest dining room, library and TV/media room.

Yahoo!’s Community Relations Strategist Lisa Karstetter notes, “Yahoo! strives to make a positive impact on society and support the causes that matter to our employees and the communities in which we operate. This was a much-needed addition for The Cambridge. I've had several personal calls from family members of residents thanking us for the wonderful addition. They are extremely grateful and appreciative of us for thinking of these seniors, many who were Quincy’s original settlers.”

This is the third recent community project that Mortenson and Yahoo! have joined forces to complete for the small community of Quincy. Previously, Mortenson and Yahoo! held a local drive to help the Quincy Food Bank. The team was able to collect more than $1,200 of monetary donations as well as 491 pounds of food donations for the community. In addition, Mortenson and Yahoo! partnered to build a new play area for a local preschool. Mortenson built and installed the new fence and Yahoo! is providing the playground equipment which will soon be installed.

“Stewardship is a cornerstone of our business. We not only want to build great resources for communities, but also enhance the ones already there. We are pleased to team up with Yahoo! to help support the Quincy community,” said Jim Yowan, vice president of Mortenson Construction.

Mortenson participates in about a dozen community service projects each year in Washington State and around the Pacific Northwest, and hundreds of community service projects annually nationwide. Non-profits that benefit from Mortenson's support include United Way, Food Lifeline and Big Brothers Big Sisters.
