Months To Go: How’s Your Hurricane Prep?

Assurant Specialty Property encourages customers to develop a hurricane plan to protect your family and safeguard your irreplaceable belongings.

ATLANTA--()--Football practice is underway and back-to-school specials are in the stores, but summer’s less than half over – and for Americans in coastal zones, hurricane season has barely begun.

This press release has an accompanying Smart Marketing Page providing further details about the organization, products and services introduced below. You can access the Smart Marketing Page via the following link: http://smp.businesswire.com/pages/months-go-hows-your-hurricane-prep.

Assurant Specialty Property, a leading provider of insurance services, urges its customers and communities to make sure to prepare for hurricanes well before storms appear. While the 2013 storm season has yet to see a hurricane, experts have predicted as much as a 72 percent chance of a major storm making landfall on the U.S. coast by November.

Hurricane season traditionally runs from June to November. Assurant’s claims teams are always ready for storm damage, and the company urges consumers to do likewise.

“Hurricanes are among the most serious perils that can impact a homeowner,” said Gene Mergelmeyer, CEO of Assurant Specialty Property, a unit of Assurant Inc. “The good news is, we know where hurricanes strike, and thanks to forecasting technology, people usually have time to evacuate. But that doesn’t mean you don’t need to plan ahead.”

Assurant Specialty Property advises its employees and its customers that a good hurricane plan is vital to protecting your family and safeguarding your irreplaceable belongings.

Assurant Specialty Property urges residents of coastal zones to remember to P-R-E-P – plan, ready, educate and protect. Plan a course of action for your family, including where you would go if urged to evacuate. Ready yourself with emergency essentials like food and water, an emergency radio, first aid supplies and needed items for children and pets. Educate yourself about weather patterns and what’s expected for your area. Protect yourself in potentially unsafe situations.

And remember, if your home is struck by a hurricane, tornado, fire or other catastrophe, it’s also important to be prepared to file your insurance claim. Have an inventory of your belongings for insurance purposes. A video recording is a great way to document your possessions so your insurance company can handle your claim promptly. Keep your insurance information readily available, including policy numbers and phone numbers. In the wake of a disaster, you may not be able to find your policy.
