BLOOMFIELD, Conn.--()--Cigna (NYSE: CI) has announced David Figliuzzi, 44, of Hartford, Conn., as the new executive director of the Cigna Foundation. In this role, Figliuzzi will steer the foundation as it supports worthy charitable organizations and programs that align with Cigna's mission to help people improve their health, well-being and sense of security.

Figliuzzi has been with Cigna for 19 years, most recently in the company’s Total Health and Network organization. He has lived in Hartford since 2001.

“I’m honored to take the helm of the Cigna Foundation as we work to ensure that our philanthropic dollars have the most positive impact possible in improving health and well-being,” Figliuzzi said. “Philanthropy and service to others is a part of Cigna's DNA. In my work on our corporate side, I’ve seen personally the tremendous difference Cigna has made in improving individual health. It’s exciting to now be part of the Cigna Foundation’s efforts to help build healthier communities too.”

“David’s vast experience in Cigna's business gives him strong insight into who we are as a company and our philosophy on giving. He is passionate about corporate responsibility and is well-suited to guide our foundation,” said Cigna CEO and Cigna Foundation board member David Cordani.

Figliuzzi has a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Western Connecticut State University and a Master of Science in Health Services Administration degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

The Cigna Foundation has a proud history of making a difference in well-being the world over. The foundation is celebrating its 50th anniversary throughout 2013, and continues its long-standing support of the March of Dimes and the United Way, as well as assisting more than 100 additional charitable organizations since the October 2012 anniversary date. Cigna Foundation programs also support the many volunteer activities of Cigna's employees.

“One of the best ways the Cigna Foundation helps others is through the combined energy of our workforce,” Figliuzzi said. “Part of the foundation’s mission is to help employees give back through volunteerism. Over the last 50 years, Cigna employees have volunteered more than a million hours of their time in service to others. That’s an incredible record and source of pride for all of us.”
