TOKYO--()--Toshiba Corporation (TOKYO:6502) today announced the launch of a new line of automotive-grade 2.5-inch HDD, the MQ01AADxxxC series, that includes a model with the world's largest capacity, the 320 GB[2] "MQ01AAD032C". Developed to meet the auto industry demand for higher capacity HDDs, the drives support an improved in-vehicle user experience, and facilitate a growing range of on-board technological applications and functions. Mass production is scheduled to start in August.

The MQ01AADxxxC series offers 100GB, 200GB and 320GB storage capacities that address the needs of telematic infotainment applications, where proven reliability, performance and capacity are required. The drives have been designed to handle the most difficult environments, including altitudes of up to 5,650m—higher than any city in the world, and toleration of vibrations of up to 29.4m/s2 {3G} in magnitude. They have an operating temperature range of -30°C to +85°C and a non-operating temperature range of -40°C to +95°C. The MQ01AADxxxC series is also suitable for industrial applications where extended temperature tolerance is critical.

A closed loop servo control system enables a linear recording density of 62.6k bit/mm {1.59M BPI} - the highest ever[3] for automotive-grade HDDs. The drives run at 4,200rpm and are fitted with a 3Gbit/s SATA interface, and can boast an internal data transfer rate of 976Mbit/s, a 28% improvement against existing Toshiba products[4]. The new products are also environmentally conscious products, halogen- and antimony-free[5] and RoHS compliant[6].

Toshiba, a pioneer in automotive storage, developed the world's first automotive-grade HDD in 2001. It remains the leading supplier in the industry with cumulative shipments surpassing 28 million units as of June 2013.

Notes
[1] As an automotive-grade 2.5-inch HDD as of June 27, 2013. Toshiba data.
[2] One Gigabyte (1 GB) is 109 =1,000,000,000 bytes. A computer operating system, however, reports storage capacity using powers of 2 for the definition of 1TB = 240= 1,099,511,627,776 bytes, 1GB = 230= 1,073,741,824 bytes and 1MB = 220= 1,048,576 bytes, and therefore shows lower storage capacity. Available storage capacity (including examples of various media files) will vary based on file size, formatting, settings, software and operating system.

[4] Compared to existing Toshiba HDD product MK2060GSC.
[5] Toshiba Semiconductor & Storage Products Company defines halogen-free and antimony-free hard disk drive products as those meeting all of the following requirements:
(a) containing bromine (Br) and chlorine (Cl) at no more than 900 parts per million (ppm) by weight for each element, and containing bromine and chlorine in an aggregate amount not exceeding 1500 ppm by weight; and (b) containing no more than 1000 ppm antimony (Sb) by weight.
For the avoidance of doubt, Halogen-Free/Antimony-Free HDD products may not be entirely free of bromine, chlorine, or antimony, and may contain other element of the halogen family.
[6] Toshiba Semiconductor & Storage Products Company defines "RoHS Directive" as the Directive 2002/95/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 27 January 2003 on the restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment.
[7] Energy consumption efficiency is calculated in accordance with the Law Concerning the Rational Use of Energy in Japan, which was enacted in 1979 to promote energy conservation and reduce energy consumption. The Law Concerning the Rational Use of Energy was most recently revised in 2009 with specific measurement criteria reflected in the specification indicated. Calculation of Energy consumption is dividing consumed energy by the capacity. The consumed energy and capacity shall be measured and specified by the Law Concerning the Rational Use of Energy.
[8] Based on the evaluation method of the International Civil Aviation Organization. Variations can occur depending on such conditions as temperature and other factors.
[9] Based on Chronological Scientific Tables. Variations can occur depending on such conditions as temperature and other factors.
