NEW YORK--()--Students, emerging designers, and industry professionals have the chance to define the workplace of the future in a competition hosted by Metropolis, the magazine of architecture, culture, and design, and Business Interiors by Staples, the furniture and interior design division of Staples Advantage. The call for entries invites the design industry across all disciplines to submit concepts that envision and exemplify the evolving workplace.

The magazine and Business Interiors by Staples created this design challenge to provide provocative answers to the question: How will we work in 2020? The contest seeks the most innovative concepts and designs for the workplace-wherever it might be and whatever it might look like.

"Technology has changed everything we do and the way we do it," said Metropolis editor in chief, Susan S. Szenasy. "It has also changed the way buildings function. In the future, the workplace will include many more advanced features, innovative materials, and developing technologies that will enable workers to perform with greater flexibility and effectiveness."

"We are challenging the design community to create its most forward-thinking depictions of the workplace so we can better understand the evolving needs of a mobile, virtual 21st century workforce," said John Michael, vice president and general manager, Business Interiors by Staples. "This design competition will create conversations and concepts that will spur new ideas for enabling productive, sustainable and healthy workplaces."

The competition seeks solutions across systems, experiences, places and spaces- anything that will make work-life more effective in 2020. Submissions can be conceptual, in the early stages of development, near completion, or completed and ready for the next phase of development. The ideas must have the potential to be made, built, or otherwise realized.

Competition judging will be moderated by Susan S. Szenasy and includes the following jury panel of industry experts, architects, and interior design professionals:

  • Paul Makovsky, editorial director, Metropolis magazine
  • John Michael, vice president and general manager, Business Interiors by Staples
  • Nona Gross, workplace strategy and design specialist, Siemens Corporation
  • Paul Darrah, director of corporate services, Bridgewater Associates
  • Jonas Damon, creative director, Frog
  • Tom Krizmanic, principal, Studios Architecture NYC

Business Interiors by Staples will award the winner of the Workplace of the Future Competition $7,500. The runner-up will receive $2,500.
