TYSONS CORNER, Va.--()--Cardinal Bank (NASDAQ: CFNL) is pleased to announce that Virginia’s Secretary of Health and Human Resources, William A. Hazel, Jr., MD, has been named Honorary Chairman of its 2013 Annual Charity Classic, benefiting Inova Kellar Center and the Cardinal Bank Community Fund. The date for the event is set for Monday, June 10, at the Country Club of Fairfax, Virginia. Celebrating its 11th season, the Cardinal Classic is regarded as one of the most successful fundraising initiatives in the Northern Virginia region.

“The Cardinal Classic is unique among high-profile fundraisers, and I am honored to work alongside Cardinal Bank and its tremendous team of volunteers,” said Dr. William A. Hazel, Jr. “The success of this annual event is due in large part to Cardinal’s strong dedication to outstanding community leadership, combined with the generosity of community members, business partners, customers, and volunteers - all giving back to the communities where they live and work,” Hazel continued.

Dr. Hazel is an orthopaedic surgeon and founding member of Commonwealth Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation in Northern Virginia. As the Secretary of Health and Human Resources, he oversees 12 state agencies, with programs ranging from Medicaid to Behavioral Health, Social Services, and Aging and Disability Services. Dr. Hazel plays an active leadership role in healthcare across the state – he is a former chair of the American Medical Association’s Council of Legislation, speaker and president of the Medical Society of Virginia, president of the Fairfax County Medical Society, and chairman of the Inova Health System Medical Affairs Council. Lauded by Governor McDonnell for his servant’s heart, Dr. Hazel has given freely of his time and expertise, performing medical procedures in Bolivia, volunteering at the RAM Mission of Mercy in Wise, Virginia, and as a volunteer physician for Chantilly High School. He is a former assistant orthopaedic surgeon for the Washington Redskins, and team physician for DC United. Dr. Hazel earned his undergraduate degree in civil engineering from Princeton University, and attended Duke University School of Medicine, completing his residency at the Mayo Clinic.

“Dr. Hazel is both a well-respected businessman and prominent surgeon, who brings an extraordinary mix of leadership, experience and credentials to the Cardinal Classic,” said F. Kevin Reynolds, Tournament Chairman. “We are keenly aware of the many demands on his time and for his expertise, and are grateful for his willingness to serve as the honorary chair of our 2013 event, to help us continue to raise awareness for the causes we support in our communities.”

Since Cardinal Bank’s first tournament in 2002, the Cardinal Classic has raised more than $2.5 million, far exceeding its original goal of $1 million, to benefit the Inova Kellar Center and the Cardinal Bank Community Fund.
