Mine Water Solutions in Extreme Environments Conference 2013

PORT WASHINGTON, N.Y.--()--Mine operators are challenged by water contamination due to extreme operating environments coupled with regulatory and cost-control issues. To meet these challenges, membrane technologies are increasingly being chosen for mine water purification and reuse applications worldwide. On April 15th, Tim Lilley, Pall’s vice president of industrial water sales and marketing, will present “Membrane-based Water Treatment Technology Provides Alternative Water Source and Discharge Solutions” during the opening plenary session at the Mine Water Solutions in Extreme Environments conference in Lima, Peru. Mr. Lilley’s presentation will describe water filtration processes under various conditions, using customer case studies to demonstrate the economy and reliability of microfiltration (MF) and reverse osmosis (RO) membranes for processes, as well as discharge and potable water production.

The case studies will quantify the advantages of Pall membrane systems over conventional treatment technologies in a range of applications. In the first example, drinking water was produced from formation water at a U.S. gold mine. The highlighted Pall AriaTM MF membrane system augments chemical treatment to remove arsenic to a level well below the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) target. In another application at a mine in Europe, RO membranes were integrated with MF to remove dissolved solids from formation water to produce water that meets EU standards for reinjection discharge. Sustainable membrane performance is critical to overall plant operation and economics, particularly for the pretreatment of contaminated water and wastewater. This is exemplified in the final case study, in which effective membrane cleaning was maintained when challenged with heavy algal blooms and other solids.

“Combining robust MF membrane systems for pre-treatment significantly improves the economy and reliability of RO,” said Mr. Lilley. “Furthermore, Pall MF membrane systems are used together with conventional chemical water treatment methods to remove heavy metals, a capability that is especially relevant to mine water applications.”

The presentation will be available in English with simultaneous live translation into Spanish. In addition, Mr. Lilley and other Pall representatives will be available in the exhibition area for consultation.

Tim Lilley, M.Sc., has been working in the field of water and wastewater treatment for more than three decades, and currently specializes in industrial water solutions for mining. He became a Chartered Chemist in 1985, joined Pall the following year, and was admitted as Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry in 1999. Mr. Lilley has published numerous technical papers in the field of fluid purification, has developed an oil/water separation hydrocyclone, and holds a patent for a novel aeration device for wastewater treatment.

Mine Water Solutions is the first in an innovative new conference series that aims to examine a wide range of issues associated with mine water management in extremely wet, dry, and cold climates and with extreme hydrogeological and geochemical issues. Consultants, engineers, managers, researchers, and scientists from around the world are expected to participate.
