  • New jobs will bring total number of UnitedHealth Group employees in North Carolina to more than 4,700
  • State and local leaders applaud company’s commitment to the Tar Heel State

GREENSBORO, N.C.--()--UnitedHealth Group (NYSE: UNH) today announced the creation of more than 1,000 new jobs in North Carolina by its UnitedHealthcare and Optum business platforms, expanding the company’s already significant presence in the state.

The new jobs, nearly 600 of which remain to be filled, include customer service representatives, claims processers, nurses and clinicians. The jobs are in UnitedHealthcare’s health benefits business and Optum’s health services business. The majority of the newly created jobs are in the company’s Greensboro office.

Currently, UnitedHealth Group employs more than 4,000 North Carolinians and serves almost 900,000 people in the state through a health care provider network of more than 130 hospitals and 20,000 physicians and other care professionals statewide.

Congressional, state and local government officials attended a news conference today announcing the new jobs, including U.S. Sen. Richard Burr, U.S. Rep. Howard Coble and Greensboro Mayor Robbie Perkins.

“North Carolina is creating new opportunities to improve the economy and bring dependable employment to the people who live here. Coupled with the state’s commitment to improving access to higher-quality health care for consumers, we believe this is a great community to continue expanding our business,” said Garland Scott, CEO, UnitedHealthcare of North Carolina.

UnitedHealth Group believes in the importance of giving back to the communities that it serves in North Carolina through local charities as well as its own programs. Over the last three years, the company contributed more than $1.5 million to organizations such as BackPack Beginnings, The American Heart Association, GOFAR Kids, Housing Greensboro, the YMCA and the March of Dimes. The company also provided grant money to North Carolina children through its UnitedHealth HEROES program, which encourages local youth organizations to create and implement hands-on programs to fight childhood obesity.

“This announcement is good news not only for UnitedHealth Group, but for the city of Greensboro and our entire state,” Sen. Burr said. “I congratulate UnitedHealth Group on their growth and am proud of them for recognizing and investing in the talented, well-trained workforce in North Carolina.”

“I'm thrilled that UnitedHealth Group is creating more than a thousand new jobs right here in North Carolina,” U.S. Sen. Kay Hagan said. “Job creation is my top priority, and I want to make sure companies know that our state is open for business. I look forward to this job growth, and I will keep working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to grow our economy and create jobs.”

“UnitedHealth Group’s creation of more than 1,000 jobs in North Carolina means a great deal to this community and to our state,” Rep. Howard Coble said. “I am pleased that UnitedHealth Group is investing in the people of North Carolina and helping to grow our local economy.”

“UnitedHealth Group has been an important business partner in Greensboro for many years, and we are pleased it has made the decision to expand and create new jobs in our community,” said Mayor Perkins. “These new positions will help people who are seeking a quality job and provide an economic boost to the region.”
