EAGAN, Minn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Northwest Airlines (NYSE:NWA), in cooperation with its joint venture partner, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, today during a news conference at the Portland International Airport, announced an expansion of its trans-Atlantic route network with new daily nonstop service from Portland, Ore. to Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
Scheduled to begin March 29, 2008, Northwest’s nonstop Portland-Amsterdam service will conveniently connect Portland and the Pacific Northwest to more than 80 destinations throughout Europe, Africa, India and the Middle East via the Northwest/ KLM hub at Amsterdam’s award winning Schiphol Airport. Northwest’s Portland-Amsterdam service will also provide convenient connections to dozens of destinations beyond Portland via partner airlines Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air.

Northwest will utilize fuel-efficient Airbus A330-200 aircraft on the Portland-Amsterdam route, which offer 32 seats in World Business Class and 211 economy class seats. In addition to having the largest A330 fleet in the world, Northwest also operates the youngest trans-Atlantic fleet of any North American or European carrier.
A330 Aircraft Offers Better Seating, In-Flight Entertainment
Northwest’s A330s are equipped with the airlines’ World Business Class lie-flat seats, more personal space in economy class seats compared to other aircraft in the fleet, and an on demand in-flight entertainment (IFE) system in both cabins. The interactive IFE system offers travelers a choice of 40 movies, four short-subject video programs, 56 different audio selections, six games, shopping and in-flight information, allowing customers the freedom and flexibility to start, pause or stop their selection at any time.
In World Business Class, customers are able to view any of these features on a 10.4 inch/26.4 centimeter video screen. Customers traveling in economy class are able to view these features on a personal video screen in the seatback in front of them.
World Business Class travelers enjoy an array of features including a lie-flat seat with a privacy canopy, 60 inches of space between seats, 110-volt personal laptop power port, cycling lumbar support, a six-way adjustable headrest and four seat-back storage pockets.
Northwest’s A330 economy class seat offers more personal space than any other seat in the carrier’s fleet and features a “winged” headrest, with bendable sides, allowing the customer to rest their head or sleep toward the side of the seat.
Northwest Airlines first served Portland in 1938 and began daily nonstop service to Tokyo’s Narita Airport in 2004. With the addition of daily nonstop Portland-Amsterdam service, Northwest will offer more international seats than any other carrier serving Portland.
