LA Sports & Entertainment Commission Announces 6th Annual Golf & Tennis Classic; Los Angeles Times Sports Editor Bill Dwyre to be Honored

LOS ANGELES--()--Feb. 14, 2005--The LA Sports & Entertainment Commission's (LASEC) 6th Annual Golf & Tennis Classic, presented by American Express, will tee off again this year at The Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades on Monday, May 16, 2005. During dinner ceremonies, Bill Dwyre, Los Angeles Times sports editor, will be presented with LASEC's prestigious Sports & Entertainment Ambassador Award of Excellence.

LASEC President Kathy Schloessman says, "This is an incredibly popular 'sold-out' event each year, and this year will be no exception. Also, we're very pleased that Bill Dwyre has agreed to accept the very special 'Ambassador' award." This award was established to recognize and honor an individual who best exemplifies the highest qualities of outstanding achievement in his or her field and, through this work, projects a positive image for the City of Los Angeles. Previous winners include John Wooden; ABC-TV sportscaster Al Michaels; Pat Haden; and tennis great, Pam Shriver.

Dwyre joined the Times in 1981 and was named sports editor shortly thereafter. Previously, he was with the Milwaukee Journal from 1968-1971, most recently as sports editor and columnist. Before that he was on the copy desk of the Des Moines Register & Tribune for two years. A native of Sheboygan, Wis., he was graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1966 with a B.A. degree in communication/arts.

A few corporate sponsor, foursome and individual openings are available for golf as well as corporate sponsor and single spots for tennis. The ESPN team of Pete Webber, Tony Renaud, Jerry Page and actor Joe Pesci won low gross in the golf tournament last year.

Again this year, the golf tournament will be a scramble format, and the tennis agenda will include instructional clinics and eight-game pro set competition. Celebrities, golf pros and tennis pros also will be on hand for the full day of activities that include golf and tennis clinics, tournaments, lunch, a reception and buffet dinner, silent auction and awards program.

Corporate sponsorships for golf are $12,500, team foursomes are $8,000 and individual player slots are $2,200. For tennis, a corporate sponsorship is $2,000, and a single player is $500. Net proceeds benefit LASEC.
