First Command Joins Philanthropic Leaders in Support of Veterans and Military Families for Independence Day
FORT WORTH, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Independence Day is an ideal time to reflect on the blessings of liberty and the dedication of America's military servicemembers who defend it in dangerous places around the world. This year, First Command Financial Services, Inc. is observing this special day by joining forces with the philanthropic sector to give something back to our heroes and their family members.
“As Americans come together to recognize the great sacrifices of our men and women in uniform this Independence Day, First Command is honored to add our gifts and our voice to this important initiative”
After nearly 13 years, the war in Iraq and Afghanistan will come to an end and nearly 2 million service men and women will return home. This stateside surge presents new opportunities to offer support to military families as they transition home. Faced with challenges in employment and access to physical and mental health treatment, but also offering unique leadership and skills, we must ensure our veterans have a successful return to civilian life.
As a reflection of our commitment to help meet these needs, First Command Financial Services, Inc., is taking the Philanthropy-Joining Forces Impact Pledge with more than 30 philanthropic organizations to make sure veterans and military families receive the long-term support they deserve. We are proud to be working in close partnership with the Joining Forces initiative led by First Lady Michelle Obama and Second Lady Dr. Jill Biden, and supported by groups from the nonprofit, philanthropic, and corporate sectors.
This effort includes a commitment of more than $170 million over the next five years to help create affordable housing, provide health and wellness services, support education and job training, prevent domestic violence, expand economic opportunities, and more.
First Command recently announced it is pledging $3.6 million through Squared Away®, the company’s ongoing commitment to extend awareness of and take action to address the critical life issues facing active-duty military, post-911 veterans and military spouses. Squared Away is designed to assist past and present servicemembers and their families reeling from a decade of war, defense downsizings and economic turmoil through an unprecedented commitment of First Command’s time, personnel and financial resources.
Philanthropy’s unique ability to collaborate across sectors, build consensus, and pool resources to make strategic investments in our communities must be part of the solution. That’s why the Council on Foundations, which is supporting the Philanthropy-Joining Forces Impact Pledge effort, is launching the “Veterans Philanthropy Exchange,” to allow philanthropic organizations to share best practices, address emerging needs, leverage resources for maximum benefit and enlist more donors.
“As Americans come together to recognize the great sacrifices of our men and women in uniform this Independence Day, First Command is honored to add our gifts and our voice to this important initiative,” said Scott Spiker, CEO of First Command “By supporting active duty military members, veterans and their spouses with the programs and resources critical to putting their professional, personal and financial lives in order, we hope to give them the peace of mind they’ve earned and the feelings of security they deserve. And by committing to the Philanthropy-Joining Forces Impact Pledge, we hope to encourage others in industry to support the employment, education and morale of America’s military families.”
