For people who need orthopedic surgery, finding a qualified surgeon is only part of the challenge. Scheduling delays, travel requirements, and uncertainty about costs can make getting care more difficult. Transcarent and OVN help to address these barriers to high-quality care through an expanded local network, coordinated referrals, and scheduling assistance to reduce delays between a surgical recommendation and treatment, and bundled pricing established before care begins.

“A surgery benefit should do more than help someone find a surgeon. It should help people confirm whether they need surgery, know how soon they can get care, and what it will cost,” said Glen Tullman, Chief Executive Officer of Transcarent. “Together with OVN, we're expanding access to independent orthopedic practices closer to where our Members live and work, helping them get required surgery, and providing clear, up-front pricing so they can focus on their recovery.”

Transcarent’s end-to-end MSK & Surgery Care experience begins with an orthopedic consult or expert medical opinion through industry leader, 2nd.MD, that provides face-to-face appointments with expert specialists and surgeons. During such consults, Members receive specialist guidance on their diagnosis, treatment options, including whether surgery is appropriate. When surgery is needed, Transcarent’s Surgery Care team provides benefits guidance and support before and after the procedure, while OVN’s independent orthopedic groups, representing more than 12,000 clinicians nationwide, lead treatment decisions and care delivery.

OVN is the nation’s largest physician-led musculoskeletal clinically integrated network and the only physician-driven national MSK provider network designed to deliver community-based high-quality care at scale. Its comprehensive model spans operative and non-operative care and is built around quality, clinical appropriateness, transparency and value, helping employers and their people access the right care, from the right provider, at the right facility, at the right time. By supporting clinically appropriate care in lower-cost settings, including ambulatory surgery centers, and with transparent pricing, quality and value at the center of its model, OVN helps make MSK and surgical care more accessible, predictable and affordable.

“OVN was built to connect people with the full spectrum of MSK care through independent orthopedic practices in their communities — organizations committed to quality, efficiency, transparency, and an exceptional patient experience,” said Heath Kirschner, Chief Executive Officer of the OrthoForum Value Network. “Through our partnership with Transcarent, we’re able to engage people earlier, bring expert medical opinions into the decision process, and ensure they receive the right intervention at the right time — from conservative care through surgery and recovery.”

Through its partnership with OVN, Transcarent expands local access to high-quality orthopedic care with clinically guided support and predictable bundled pricing. For eligible procedures, employers know the cost of the surgical episode in advance, while Members receive a clear explanation of any out-of-pocket responsibility, with no surprise bills for services included in the bundle. Transcarent Surgery Care delivers average savings of $17,943 per surgical episode, with a 0.63% complication rate and a 0.05% readmission rate.1 By comparison, published industry benchmarks show a 3.6% complication rate2 and 2.7% to 3.1% readmission rates for common orthopedic procedures3.

For OVN practices, the partnership creates a connection to Transcarent’s employer clients and Members who need orthopedic care. Transcarent supports referrals, benefits coordination, and the Member experience, while independent orthopedic physicians lead treatment decisions and care delivery in their local communities.
