SCHAUMBURG, Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--AI investment and adoption are accelerating faster than governance maturity in most organizations, with many enterprises lacking repeatable processes, accountability, data discipline and performance controls needed for mature AI. CMMI Institute, a global leader in helping organizations boost performance, build capability and reduce risk, is empowering these enterprises with its new CMMI AI Maturity (CMMI AIM) model, designed to drive sustainable innovation and measurable enterprise performance outcomes with AI adoption.

CMMI AIM provides a single integrated approach for governing AI capabilities and adoptions, enabling organizations to move from fragmented AI efforts to measurable, scalable, consistently governed and integrated organizational capability and performance with clear ROI. It builds upon CMMI’s globally recognized, outcome-based approach to performance improvement with AI-specific contextual guidance and best practices that enable organizations to identify gaps, assess risks and manage AI performance across the lifecycle.

Delivering Measurable Value

CMMI AIM delivers several targeted outcomes for the organizations, regulatory agencies and governing bodies that leverage it, including:

  • Visibility into AI maturity across teams and functions
  • Improved decision-making for AI investments
  • Standardized AI practices across teams and domains
  • More consistent and reliable delivery outcomes
  • Clear roadmap for maturity improvement
  • Ability to measure progress over time
  • Verifying regulatory compliance requirements

“Organizations have clear expectations for adopting and investing in the technology, including clear, consistent and measurable ROI, faster innovation, lowered costs, and better business performance—all while mitigating key AI adoption risk,” says Ron Lear, CMMI Institute Vice President, Global CMMI Strategies. “CMMI AIM is well positioned to help enterprises right now to balance those opportunities and risks around AI adoption, all from a maturity model that has been trusted for decades.”

Applying an AI View Across Content, Domains

A significant expansion of the CMMI Model, CMMI AIM includes AI-related content across all 31 CMMI Practice Areas, with nearly 50 percent of practices containing AI context-specific additions. It also includes a new benchmark view through the lens of CMMI AIM focused on eight integrated domains:

  • Data: Robust data management infrastructure and governance, from data lineage to data quality, to drive reliable AI outcomes and solutions
  • Development: The design, development and use of high-quality AI solutions aligned with customer needs and expectations
  • People: Preparing and enabling the workforce to embrace AI through alignment to organizational business objectives
  • Safety: Solution-level and societal safety in AI interventions, mitigating severity and likelihood of AI-related harm
  • Security: Secure use of AI platforms and tools to enhance stakeholder confidence
  • Services: Delivery of superior service quality to customers within AI-as-a-Service business models and through integration of AI across existing and new service delivery ecosystems
  • Suppliers: Building an effective and efficient AI partnership ecosystem to deliver consistent value to end users
  • Virtual: Effective virtual collaboration through robust infrastructure to deliver cohesive outcomes across AI solution development and usage

CMMI AIM is also supported by a comprehensive set of model assets, including the new CMMI Model Viewer Plus, which includes the CMMI AIM Model and CMMI AIM Crosswalks, CMMI AIM Appraisal, and CMMI AIM Practitioner and CMMI AIM Lead Appraiser certifications and related training. This includes the Building Artificial Intelligence Maturity (BAIM) Course and Appraising Artificial Intelligence Maturity (AAIM) Course.

Foundation Based on Global Expertise, Insights

This new AI-related content was developed by the CMMI AI Working Group, comprised of more than 25 industry experts worldwide, including executives, practitioners, instructors, lead appraisers and subject matter experts across a range of industries, with IBM Consulting as the sponsor. Additional input was also provided by 100 companies through structured community and internal reviews during the development period.

Additionally, IBM Consulting, along with Infosys Limited and Government Technical Services Corporation (GTSC), were evaluated as part of a CMMI AIM pilot program. Other organizations who led and served on the pilot program appraisals, delivered training and contributed expertise included representatives from Benchmarked Pty Ltd, CommandTec and KPMG Assurance and Consulting Services LLP.

“Despite AI’s great possibilities, many organizations are struggling to realize its full business value and ROI right now,” says Chris Dimitriadis, ISACA Chief Global Strategy Officer. “CMMI’s longtime, globally recognized leadership in performance improvement, combined with the latest AI best practices, expert insights and experiences with CMMI AIM, elevates the trusted, structured approach to meet the needs of organizations in today’s AI-driven world.”
