Epic Cleantec Unveils First-Ever Commercial Beer Made from Recycled Shower and Laundry Water

The world’s first commercial beer made from recycled building water introduces consumers across the country to what’s possible with water reuse.

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Epic Cleantec (“Epic”), a pioneer in onsite water reuse solutions for the real estate industry, today announced the launch of a groundbreaking commercial beer made with highly purified recycled water from showers and laundry — now available to consumers across the United States.

Shower Hour IPA and Laundry Club Kölsch, Epic’s two beer styles, are category-defining brews made with a uniquely sustainable ingredient: recycled water. Crafted in partnership with the award-winning team at Devil’s Canyon Brewing Company in San Carlos, CA, the beers use water from buildings where Epic operates advanced onsite reuse systems. The water is cleaned with modern, state-of-the-art technology to ensure it’s exceptionally pure.

Buildings globally use 15% of all potable water, yet almost none reuse it. Closing that loop represents one of the biggest opportunities to create more efficient, resilient water systems. And the technology to do it is already proven and trusted — astronauts have relied on advanced water recycling for decades.

“As water and infrastructure challenges grow worldwide, buildings continue to discard perfectly good water with tremendous potential for reuse. By creating Shower Hour IPA and Laundry Club Kölsch, we’re giving people a fun and approachable way to see recycled water in a new light,” said Aaron Tartakovsky, co-founder and CEO of Epic Cleantec. “If a single great beer can change minds, imagine the impact of these advanced water reuse technologies when deployed at scale.”

In addition to using highly-purified recycled water, the Shower Hour IPA is crafted with sustainability from grain to glass. The beer is brewed with drought-resistant, soil-enriching ingredients that showcase the promise of regenerative agriculture

  • Azacca® hops – semi-dwarf genetics for high cone efficiency, reduced irrigation needs, and robust disease tolerance.
  • Fonio grain – a naturally drought-tolerant cereal that grows quickly without fertilizers, supports soil health, and restores nutrients to the land.
  • Kveik yeast – ferments fast and hot, reducing overall energy consumption during brewing.

“Shower Hour IPA and Laundry Club Kölsch, two first-of-a-kind beers, are a testament to what’s possible when innovation, sustainability, and craftsmanship converge,” said Chris Garrett, founder and CEO of Devil’s Canyon Brewing Company. “We've lovingly imbued these beers with our values, leading with pristine recycled water and incorporating an added layer of responsibly-sourced ingredients for the IPA. We’re proud to partner with Epic Cleantec to change the narrative around water, our most precious natural resource, and meet beer consumers’ demand for a drink brewed with only the highest quality ingredients.”

Epic launched its original recycled water beer, OneWater Brew, in November 2022. Produced as an experimental, non-commercial run of only 7,500 cans, Epic’s OneWater Brew was nonetheless named a TIME Best Invention and Fast Company World Changing Idea. The beer became a viral sensation and was met with overwhelming enthusiasm from consumers, business leaders, public figures, news anchors, and UN dignitaries alike. This new commercial release advances the concept from pilot to full-scale commercial production.

This launch marks the first time Epic’s beers will be sold in select markets nationwide. They’re now available in stores at major retailers in California, including BevMo!, Total Wine & More, and Bianchini’s Market, as well as select San Francisco Bay Area stores. Distribution will begin in California, Virginia, Oregon, Ohio, Kentucky, Vermont, New Hampshire, Nebraska, North Dakota, Rhode Island, Alaska, and Washington, D.C.

Consumers in eligible states can also purchase the beers online at the Devil’s Canyon Brewing Company website, with brewery taproom availability beginning Friday, November 21.
