MassMutual Appoints Ying Yu Head of Sustainability

ESG industry veteran joins company to lead integration of sustainable business practices throughout organization

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. & BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--As part of its long-standing commitment to operating a sustainable business, Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual) announced today that Ying Yu has been named Head of Sustainability.

In this newly created role, Yu will build upon the company’s existing efforts and lead the development and implementation of a company-wide environmental, social and governance (ESG) strategy. Developing MassMutual’s ESG vision, principles and targets will include formally outlining a roadmap for success, implementing relevant programs and operating principles, fostering a culture of sustainability through collaboration and engagement, and communicating about progress internally and externally to key stakeholders. Yu will report to Geoff Craddock, MassMutual’s Chief Risk Officer.

“Ying is an experienced leader who can guide MassMutual in setting and achieving aspirational ESG goals and concretely making progress against them,” said Craddock. “She will build upon our strong foundational efforts and firmly establish an industry-leading sustainability strategy that aligns with our mutual structure, ensures continued business growth, and enables us to support our policyowners and communities for generations to come.”

This year, MassMutual joined UN-supported Principles for Responsible Investment and became the first U.S.-based mutual life insurance company with a 2050 net zero investment portfolio goal. Yu will further shape MassMutual’s existing sustainability program including driving these two most recent endeavors.

Yu most recently served as a Senior Vice President at Prologis where she was responsible for the global ESG and sustainability strategy and policy implementation across the company’s $148 billion global real estate portfolio. Prior to that role, Yu established the Bose Corporation’s Global Sustainability Department – including its vision and strategy framework – and the global governance structure, building a culture of sustainability company-wide with a focus on employees, customers, communities, and the business.
