City of Hope Celebrates Earning One of Nursing’s Highest Honors

The prestigious Magnet^® recognition from the American Nurses Credentialing Center highlights City of Hope’s world-class nursing team and their superior level of compassionate patient care

DUARTE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--City of Hope, a world-renowned independent research and treatment center for cancer, diabetes and other life-threatening diseases, and its nursing team have achieved the prestigious Magnet^® recognition from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). It is the comprehensive cancer center’s first Magnet recognition — one of the highest honors in nursing.

The Magnet recognition is a national acknowledgement of City of Hope’s commitment to both outstanding health care delivery and improved patient outcomes. Only 9% of all hospitals nationwide have earned the Magnet recognition, and only 12% of hospitals in California have it.

City of Hope also received six exemplars, or special recognitions, for having a highly educated nursing staff, extraordinary performance in patient satisfaction and superb prevention of surgical harm. These exemplars demonstrate City of Hope’s commitment to personalized care and the expert skill of its nurses.

A hospital or medical center must undergo rigorous review before a Magnet recognition is given. The process includes a written submission that demonstrates stellar performance in more than 80 standards. Delegates from the credentialing body visited City of Hope virtually, toured more than 50 units or departments, and listened to comments from over 500 nurses and staff before a decision was made.

“Our nurses, nursing leaders and the entire City of Hope organization have worked toward the goal of Magnet recognition for many years,” said Susan J. According to ANCC research, Magnet recognition is associated with positive outcomes such as higher patient satisfaction, lower mortality risk and higher job satisfaction among nurses. These outcomes align closely with City of Hope’s century-long mission of providing patients with the best possible and most compassionate care.
