UFCW 8-Golden State Offers Reward in Attack on Union Rite Aid Employee

$2,000 total offered for information leading to arrest of suspect

DAVIS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--UFCW 8-Golden State, the Union representing employees at Rite Aid stores in most of Northern and Central California, announced today it is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the apprehension of a suspect in the attack on a 62-year-old Rite Aid clerk in Davis on Jan. 20.

The reward matches a similar offer from the Rite Aid Corporation, bringing the total award to $2,000.

“All of our members are part of the Union family,” UFCW 8-Golden State President Jacques Loveall said in announcing the reward. “Whenever members of our family are threatened, we will rise to their defense, whether the danger comes from physical violence, a virus or economic hardship.”

Loveall said the victim of the unprovoked attack is a 44-year UFCW member with full Union benefits including state-of-the-art health care and dignity in retirement with a defined benefit pension.

Davis police said the attack began at 7:53 p.m. in the Rite Aid store at 2100 block of Cowell Boulevard when a white or Hispanic man about 5’8” tall and weighing approximately 180 pounds started striking the clerk with his fists and hitting him with a metal shelf. A surveillance video shows the attacker wearing a black sweatshirt with a green stripe around the chest. Police say the attacker then briefly left the store before returning to hit the clerk again.

Persons with information about the assault should call the Davis Police Department at (530) 747-5400 and select Option 9.

UFCW 8-Golden State represents tens of thousands of members in supermarkets, drug stores, food processing plants, wineries, distilleries, cannabis facilities, medical offices and other workplaces between the Oregon border and the Bakersfield region.
