MIAMI--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Big Brothers Big Sisters of Miami today announced that Gale Nelson, who currently serves as the president and who served as the organization’s executive vice president for 11 years, has been elevated to president and CEO. The transition becomes effective January 8, 2018. Lydia Muniz, who has served as president and CEO for 30 years, will become chief executive emeritus. The announcement comes at a pivotal time for the organization, which will celebrate its 60th anniversary in 2018.
“Lydia has made an indelible impact on Big Brothers Big Sisters of Miami and the Greater Miami community, transitioning the agency from a small not-for-profit organization to one that tripled in service delivery and budget, raising more than $60 million and receiving numerous awards along the way,” said Chairman Matt Gorson. “In his new role, Gale will further build on the platform that Lydia established as we advance our mission of transforming the lives of children and families in Miami-Dade.”

Under Muniz’s tenure, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Miami earned national recognition as one of the country’s leading Big Brothers Big Sisters agencies. Its volunteer and client base expanded to reflect the ethnic diversity of Miami-Dade County. In 2016, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Miami moved into its permanent home, the Carnival Center for Excellence. Today, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Miami serves over 7,000 children, families, volunteers and community organizations and is nationally recognized as an evidence-based youth prevention and development program.
In her role as chief executive emeritus, Muniz will focus on community and government relations, as well as fund development, through the end of July 2018. At the request of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, Muniz will also work strategically with the national office and several affiliates around the country.
