CareDash Enhances Healthcare Provider Profiles to Detail Payments and Gifts Received from Pharmaceutical and Device Companies

Information on more than 11 million gifts and payments made in 2016 alone

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--()--CareDash.com, one of the fastest growing healthcare provider review sites dedicated to healthcare transparency, announced today that it has enhanced individual provider listings with the amount and type of gifts or payments accepted from pharmaceutical and medical device companies, as well as the amounts from specific companies for specific drugs and medical devices. This update provides consumers with a first-of-its-kind transparency into the background and business dealings of healthcare providers by combining gifts or payments received with patient reviews, education, and professional credentials.

As of 2010, pharmaceutical and medical device companies are required by law to report the giving of gifts or payments to healthcare providers and hospitals. CareDash now provides this information on each individual healthcare provider profile so that consumers can see the gift or payment accepted through 2016, the most recent data available. Patients can also see the category for the gift or payment the provider received, including food and beverage, travel, public speaking fees, consulting fees and entertainment, among others. This information can be seen for a wide range of provider types, including physicians, dentists, optometrists, and many other specialties.

"We're proud to be the first major healthcare provider review site to provide this detailed data," said Ted Chan, CEO and founder of CareDash. “Doing so illustrates our commitment to providing transparency to the patient and empowering consumers to make informed healthcare decisions. Patients have the right to know about their doctors’ motivations and potential conflicts of interest and should feel empowered to ask and fully understand their options, whether that be an alternative branded prescription or a more cost-effective generic."

The payments and gifts information now published on CareDash shows that in 2016, pharmaceutical and medical device companies:

  • Logged more than 11 million gifts and payments to healthcare providers, with the top category being “Promotional Speaking and Service”
  • Spent more than $8 billion in gifts and payments to roughly 631,000 healthcare providers
  • Spent the most in gifts and payments in California, New York, Texas, Florida and Pennsylvania

As a leader in the review space, CareDash provides a centralized location for patients to share their experiences and learn about the healthcare industry through trusted reviews and information. CareDash provides an unbiased look at available data and is a trusted resource that will help them to choose the right provider.

About CareDash
Headquartered in Cambridge, MA, CareDash.com is an online healthcare portal transforming the doctor review industry to make it more transparent and accessible for all patients regardless of their socio-economic background. Unlike other doctor review sites, CareDash does not influence, suppress or remove negative reviews in exchange for payment from providers. Unbeknownst to patients, many doctor review sites accept payments from doctors to remove and hide negative reviews. CareDash also services more patients in the low-to-middle income range than leading patient review sites – many of whom have traditionally been ignored and underrepresented in this space.
