Cigna-HealthSpring, Lyft Make Medical Transportation Easier for Customers in Select Medicare Advantage Plans

More Than 14,500 Transports Have Occurred Since Implementation

NASHVILLE, Tenn.--()--Cigna-HealthSpring, one of the nation’s leading providers of Medicare Advantage (MA) plans, is making it easier for customers in select plans in seven states and the District of Columbia to get to and from their doctors and pharmacies through medical transportation provided by the Lyft transportation network.

“Transportation can be an obstacle for older Americans in getting the care they need, which results in delayed care, worsening conditions and higher costs,” said Brian Evanko, president of Cigna’s Government Business, which includes Cigna-HealthSpring. “By providing a convenient, timely, safe ride, we can ensure at-risk customers keep their appointments and get the medications they need to better manage their chronic conditions or prevent them from developing in the first place.”

More than 14,500 transports have occurred through this collaboration. Since its introduction in May, 92 percent of Cigna-HealthSpring customers using Lyft have made it their preferred transportation option, according to customer surveys. On average, participants are waiting less than eight minutes for Lyft to take them to or from their appointments.

“We’re proud to be working with Cigna-HealthSpring to make a difference in their customers’ lives by ensuring that they are able to get to their medical appointments on time in a safe and comfortable environment,” said Gyre Renwick, VP Lyft Business.

The service is for ambulatory customers in non-emergencies only and is only available to Cigna-HealthSpring customers whose benefit plan includes supplemental non-emergent medical transportation coverage through Access2Care at no additional cost. Participants need to contact Access2Care to establish Lyft as their designated transportation provider.

The benefit is available to certain customers in select counties in Alabama, Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Texas and the District of Columbia. Customers can call the phone number on the back of their identification card to see if they qualify. The number of available rides varies by plan. The service is not available to all ZIP codes in all markets.
