NATO C3B Adopts OMG Unified Architecture Framework Standard

NEEDHAM, Mass.--()--The Object Management Group® (OMG®), an international, open membership, not-for-profit technology standards consortium, today announced that the NATO Consultation, Command and Control Board (NATO C3B) adopted both the OMG Unified Architecture Framework™ (OMG UAF®) and The Open Group Archimate (TOG Archimate) as approved metamodels for the NATO Architecture Framework, Version 4. The UAF standard is aimed at improving strategic gaps in communications and interoperability of complex systems of systems among coalition partners uncovered in critical operations such as Afghanistan.

The decision was made upon the recommendation of the NATO Architecture Capabilities Team (ACaT), which consulted with representatives of the OMG UAF and C4I groups earlier this year in Ottawa and Oslo. OMG continues discussion with ACaT Chairs on refining requirements for further development and revision of UAF to support NATO architecture requirements. OMG and TOG management are also discussing ways to increase cooperation between the two groups on architecture standards.

According to OMG Vice President and Technical Director Larry Johnson, “The Object Management Group has spent many years developing a body of specifications that constitute a lingua franca for the international information modeling and meta-modeling community. The UAF brings architecture principles forged in the multinational defense communities to the commercial sectors such as aviation, finance, and the emerging industrial internet of things (IIoT).”
