Foundation for Chiropractic Progress Participates in Nation’s First Integrative Pain Care Policy Congress

Reaches consensus on defining “comprehensive integrative pain management”

HASBROUCK HEIGHTS, N.J.--()--The Foundation for Chiropractic Progress (F4CP), a leading voice of the chiropractic profession, takes an active role in the national discussion of pain management, with a strong voice at the first-ever Integrative Pain Care Policy Congress hosted by the Academy of Integrative Pain Management (AIPM). More than 50 organizations representing the full scope of licensed and certified health care professionals involved in pain care united to address the opioid epidemic and overcome barriers to comprehensive, integrative pain care.

“With input and participation of providers, insurers, researchers, policymakers and policy experts, media, and consumers, this Congress had meaningful and open discussion that led to a consensus regarding the definition of comprehensive integrative pain management,” says Gerard Clum, DC, who represented the F4CP, and points to the agreed-upon definition:

Comprehensive integrative pain management includes biomedical, psychosocial, complementary health, and spiritual care. It is person-centered and focuses on maximizing function and wellness. Care plans are developed through a shared decision-making model that reflects the available evidence regarding optimal clinical practice and the person’s goals and values.

“Through collaboration with other providers and key stakeholders involved in the pain care arena, we can work together to address the nation’s pain management and opioid crisis,” adds Dr. Clum. “Chiropractic care is a critical component of the solution, and is now recognized as a first-line approach to non-pharmacological care by key regulators and thought-leaders at the American College of Physicians, Joint Commision, Society for Human Resource Management, America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP) and others.”

Doctors of chiropractic – who receive a minimum of seven years of higher education – are specifically trained to diagnose, evaluate and provide non-pharmacologic care and rehabilitation to individuals suffering from acute, subacute and chronic back, low back and neck pain, headaches, neuro-musculoskeletal conditions and other related syndromes.
