Dose Health Awarded $10,000 from Securian in MN Cup Startup Competition

Minnesota medication dispenser startup is second recipient of Securian award honoring technological innovation shaping the future of financial services or life insurance

ST. PAUL, Minn.--()--Securian Financial Group has awarded $10,000 to Dose Health, a Minnesota-based medication dispenser startup, as the 2017 winner of a Securian-sponsored award for innovation shaping the future of financial services or life insurance through technology. Securian launched the award in 2016 as part of MN Cup, an annual statewide startup competition organized by the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota.

Founded by two University of Minnesota Medical School students and one of the student’s lifelong friends, Dose Health’s mission is to ease the burden of medication adherence for patients, families and caregivers through a “smart pill box” that automatically dispenses medications at scheduled times. In the U.S. alone, medication non-adherence is estimated to claim the lives of 125,000 people annually and account for nearly $300 billion in avoidable health care costs per year.

Securian is proud to support MN Cup in fostering innovation and supporting the growth of new, Minnesota-born business ideas,” said Sid Gandhi, Securian’s chief strategy and enterprise technology officer. “This year’s finalists helped Securian look at risk prevention, and we feel Dose Health’s innovative technology has the potential to both improve mortality and expand the pool of customers medically eligible for life insurance. We congratulate the Dose Health team on their foresight and inventive approach to fulfilling an unmet need.”

Securian is a forward-thinking company with a demonstrated track record of supporting Minnesota, most recently with their involvement in the MN Cup,” said Paul Hines, M.D., Dose Health’s CEO. “It is an honor to be chosen by Securian for our shared work of helping give people peace of mind as they or their loved ones grow older.”

Dose Health and other startup companies were honored Monday, October 9, at the MN Cup Final Awards Reception, held at the McNamara Alumni Center on the University of Minnesota campus.
