Bronx Borough President’s Office to Host HERE to HERE Career Pathways Discussion on October 6th

NEW YORK--()--Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. has announced that his office will host the HERE to HERE Career Pathways Discussion on October 6, 2017, at Metropolitan College of New York’s Bronx Campus, 463 East 149th Street. The event will begin at 8:30 a.m. Co-sponsors of the event also include: Metropolitan College of NY, DreamYard, Big Picture Learning, Per Scholas and The Knowledge House.

The discussion will focus on “Creating the 21st Century Classroom” and will feature experts from the worlds of technology, education, business and government discussing effective ways to integrate technology into the classroom experience so that high school and college students are properly prepared for future technology jobs. The discussion is part of a three-part career pathways discussion. Future discussions will highlight proven methods for preparing students for high demand jobs and family-sustaining careers in the healthcare sector as well as the transportation and logistics industries. Details on the second and third events will be announced at a later date.

Although high school graduation rates have been increasing in recent years, youth unemployment and under-employment continue to vex low-income communities throughout the Bronx and New York City. With regard to the discussion on October 6, the tech sector’s employment growth is outpacing most other industries, and jobs in many industries increasingly require technology skills. These higher-paying technology jobs are also disproportionately held by white men. The goal of the conversation is to identify how local schools can create career pathways so their students have access to family-supporting jobs.

HERE to HERE, a co-sponsor of the event, works strategically with employer, education and community partners to create career pathways that mutually benefit 14 to 25 year-olds and employers seeking talent. HERE to HERE focuses on young Bronxites while they are still in school. HERE to HERE’s network partners seek to create multiple, multi-year pathways for young adults to gain (self) knowledge through classroom-based curriculum and career counseling, and acquire additional training through employer recognized certifications and internships/ apprenticeships. The ultimate goal is for these young people to secure and succeed in a family-sustaining career that is well aligned with their interests, talents and expertise.

Preparing our students for the economy of the future requires synergy between our schools and our growing tech sector,” said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. “This event will help my office and others develop a plan for greater collaboration between our schools and our employers, and I look forward to taking part in it.”

HERE to HERE works with leaders across key fields to maximize career opportunities for young people in The Bronx. This discussion is a prime example of the cross-industry collaboration needed to develop curriculum, structure internship programs and forge partnerships that are tailored to the needs and interests of young people in the community and informed by a very dynamic labor market,” said HERE to HERE Chair Judy Dimon.
