Charles Butt Scholarship for Aspiring Teachers Application Process Opens at 10 Universities

100 Scholarships of $8,000 per year available in first year

AUSTIN, Texas--()--The Raise Your Hand Texas Foundation today announced applications are open for the Charles Butt Scholarships for Aspiring Teachers. The scholarships are part of the Raising Texas Teachers initiative, a program to provide $50 million over the next 10 years in scholarship funding for students committed to a career in teaching, and technical support for premier Texas teacher preparation programs.

In the first year, 100 scholarships are available from 10 universities:

  • Our Lady of the Lake University (San Antonio)
  • Rice University (Houston)
  • Southern Methodist University (Dallas)
  • Texas A&M University - Special Education Program (College Station)
  • Texas Tech University (Lubbock)
  • Trinity University (San Antonio)
  • University of North Texas at Dallas (Dallas)
  • University of Houston (Houston)
  • University of Texas Austin (Austin)
  • University of Texas Rio Grande Valley - Student Teacher Educator Preparation: University Partnership (Edinburg)

Charles Butt Scholars will receive $8,000 in scholarship funding per year, ongoing training and development opportunities, mentorship from sitting public school educators, and involvement in a statewide aspiring teachers network facilitated by Raise Your Hand. The program will expand over time to include leadership development opportunities for Texas’s top high school students interested in a career in education. Partner universities will also receive technical assistance support to improve the quality of teacher preparation across Texas.

Applicants will be notified in March 2018 whether they move on to final in-person interviews.
