The research study covers the present scenario and growth prospects of the global military HUD market for 2017-2021. Technavio presents a detailed picture of the market by way of study, synthesis, and summation of data from multiple sources.
HUD systems with digital processing enhance users' view as it confers the ability to display videos and images overlaid with symbols onto the HUD display unit on the operator's field view. Such HUD technologies are resulting in the development of advanced enhanced vision systems (EVS) and synthetic vision systems (SVS) that assist military operators to boost their field view and are contributing to the growth of the global military HUD market.

Enhancement in situational awareness with integration of night vision in HUDs
The integration of night vision technologies in HUDs provide operators with enhanced situational awareness. Night vision HUD systems use infrared sensors, which are built into the military platforms or a soldier’s wearable gear, and synchronize the image from the sensors onto the HUD. This integration overlays the imagery from thermal infrared sensors onto the transparent screen of a HUD to provide operators with a monochromatic and illuminated view of the surroundings.
Moutushi Saha, a lead defense research analyst at Technavio, says, “Latest advancements in night vision technologies have enabled the development of HUDs with visual capabilities in low light conditions with as much clarity as during the day. One such innovation is the wearable night vision HUD, developed as part of the Department of Defense Rapid Innovation Fund Program.”
Rapid growth in demand for helmet-mounted HUD systems
The development of helmet-mounted HUD systems has changed the way situational awareness was generated and viewed by military personnel. Earlier the HUDs were static devices, fixed in the direction of a vehicle or aircraft’s forward path. So, whenever the operator needed to look around the surroundings, away from the direction of movement of the platform, the operator would have to take his eyes off the information being displayed on the HUD, thus compromising their situational awareness for the moment.
“The helmet-mounted HUD technology has effectively made the HUD mobile and transferred the fixed display panel of the HUD onto the operator’s headgear, with information being projected directly onto the helmet's visor or onto goggles. Advanced optical design and solid-state image sourcing technologies are being applied to the next-generation of helmet-mounted HUD systems such as BAE Systems’ Striker-II helmet-mounted display,” adds Moutushi.
Imitation of battleground situations for military training programs
Military personnel requires extensive training to adapt themselves to critical mission requirements before they are deployed for on-field operations. Military forces are required to spend large amounts of funds for troop training, for which battlefield environments are recreated on large training grounds to give their recruits a feel of the real scenario of a warzone.
The use of virtual training systems has emerged as an innovative solution to cut down the costs on military training exercises. The use of wearable, helmet-mounted or goggle-integrated HUDs, along with augmented reality technology, is enabling the development of virtual training programs and simulations that will reduce the use of many physical training platforms, equipment, and gears.
