Bermuda Hospitals Board Chooses Spok Care Connect® to Strengthen Clinical Communications and Improve Patient Care

SPRINGFIELD, Va.--()--Spok, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Spok Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ: SPOK) and the leader in healthcare communications, announced that Bermuda Hospitals Board (BHB) has chosen the Spok Care Connect® enterprise healthcare communications platform to strengthen clinical communications among its mobile caregivers and improve patient care. Bermuda Hospitals Board comprises King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, Mid-Atlantic Wellness Institute, and the Lamb Foggo Urgent Care Centre. As the only hospital on the island, BHB serves Bermuda’s full spectrum of healthcare needs.

“BHB has a unique story," said Lloyd Holder, Vice President of Information Technology at BHB. We are a community hospital, yet we provide many other services given Bermuda’s high volume of tourist visitors and our geographic isolation. The impact of the care we provide in this environment cannot be overstated, and we are very excited to work with the Spok team. We believe the Spok Care Connect platform will make our care teams more connected and help improve patient outcomes.”

The Spok Care Connect platform includes solutions for operator console, on-call scheduling, web directory, secure mobile messaging, emergency notification, call recording, and paging. Spok Care Connect fully supports BHB’s IT strategy to standardize communications and automate as many functions as possible, as well as their clinical strategy to strengthen care coordination and become a quiet hospital.

“We are extremely pleased to partner with Bermuda Hospitals Board and help fulfill their strategic initiatives to improve caregiver communications and patient care,” said Hemant Goel, President of Spok, Inc. “While smart clinical communications and quick emergency response are critical in any healthcare organization, that need is even more pronounced for an isolated hospital like BHB, as the closest Level I trauma centers on the eastern coast of the U.S. are more than 650 miles away.”

Clinical leaders are currently using Spok Care Connect to receive notifications of critical situations on their mobile devices, such as an influx of patients coming into the emergency department. BHB leaders are excited to expand Spok solutions throughout their facilities for mobile care team collaboration.

“Efficiently receiving alert notifications on our smartphones has already had a big positive impact on our critical communications,” said Lynnette Bean, RN, Clinical Director of Critical Care at BHB. “We’re very engaged on continuing to optimize the Spok Care Connect platform for our workflows.”

Spok Care Connect had its first major test for BHB this summer at the 35th America’s Cup, the “competition for the oldest trophy in international sport,” which Bermuda hosted for the first time on its iconic Great Sound. The sailing yacht races take place over the course of a month, and as the only hospital on island, BHB was responsible for providing on-site response and medical services not only to the competing yacht clubs, but also to the more than 100,000 tourist spectators. BHB relied on Spok’s emergency notification solution to automate communication for a host of scenarios. This proved much faster and more accurate than the manual calling trees they would have relied on previously.
