TORONTO--()--TELoIP Inc. – the creator of powerful, software-defined wide-area network (SD-WAN) solutions for the most challenging, business-critical requirements; announced today the issuance by the US Patent Office of a patent that generally relates to SD-WAN system design, edge routing, points of entry, virtual core and orchestration. This patent is part of TELoIP’s portfolio of patents for its Virtual Intelligent Network Overlay Architecture.

U.S. patent number 9692713, awarded June 27, 2017 is for a system, apparatus and method for providing a virtual network edge and overlay.

“This patent relates to our VINO technology that defines the fundamental art of SD-WAN implementations and architecture principles of hub and spoke applications,” said Pat Saavedra, Founder and CTO of TELoIP. “It continues to build upon our early mover IP portfolio in SDN and SD-WAN as evidenced by the 25 claims encompassed in the patent.”

The patent is part of a portfolio of seven patents issued in the United States since 2008 and covers four areas that industry analysts have highlighted as fundamental to building and delivering an effective SD-WAN solution.

SD-WAN System Design

The patent contains claims for the use of a virtual intelligent network overlay system. The system can involve client site components such as CPE devices that aggregate data plane underlay connections to a controller/gateway controlled by a cloud-based orchestration portal. The system can manage a meshed network of client site traffic connecting to a long-haul network backbone.

SD-WAN Edge Routing

The patent contains claims that can involve routing traffic between CPE devices and SD-WAN gateway/controllers. This might include using an SD-WAN CPE with a static IP, dynamic IP, in a Customer Protected Route Domain that routes SD-WAN traffic across multiple underlay circuits to an SD-WAN gateway with bi-directional QoS, intelligent packet distribution and failover control.

SD-WAN Virtual Core and Points-of-Entry

The patent has claims that can apply to the use of multiple controller gateways together as a distributed network forming a virtual network core with an orchestrator managing long haul traffic with encapsulation or encryption between the cloud network controllers in a multi-tenant Customer Protected Route Domain.

SD-WAN Control Plane Orchestration

The patent has claims that can enable using an orchestrator to manage the data plane and control plane traffic between the controller/gateways. This may apply to the utilization of an orchestrator to communicate with SD-WAN Gateways to manage long haul transport circuits and configure SD-WAN CPEs to build a mesh of virtual edge data planes with aggregation and underlay encryption/encapsulation. This patent relates to orchestration to control bi-direction QoS, intelligent packet distribution and failover on multiple network underlay circuits using a data plane.

“In today’s competitive networking marketplace, new SDN/SD-WAN products, services and partnerships are being introduced daily,” said Rui Luis, CEO of TELoIP. “We believe that the most successful businesses will be those that leverage their intellectual property to provide novel solutions that reliably deliver high value to customers and partners.”

Before 2011, TELoIP envisioned bringing SD-WAN-as-a-Service to the market. Their challenge was to give service providers true multi-tenancy for scale and cost control. This led to several innovations in SD-WAN technology described above that are at the heart of the TELoIP Cloud, providing a virtual SD-WAN core which abstracts orchestration and routing at the network layer. By solving the challenge of overlapping customer subnets, TELoIP enables each client to establish their own secure, protected route domain within TELoIP’s managed SD-WAN core infrastructure. The net effect is that each client gets a more advanced SD-WAN solution with better cloud integration, while our MSP and CSP partners do not need to bear the heavy cost of providing dedicated cloud infrastructure and long haul transport for each customer.
