Electroencephalography (EEG) measurement data is obtained through the collection of levels of electrical activity within the brain by electrodes placed either on the scalp (non-invasive) or directly on the brain (invasive). Each method has advantages and disadvantages; however, non-invasive EEG is more widely used because it is a simpler procedure. Depending on the method, the EEG signal range of a healthy adult can range from 10µV to 100µV (scalp surface) or 10µV to 20µV (brain surface).

Moreover, EEG devices record wave patterns that are translated from an analog to a digital signal and displayed on a monitor or printed out. There are four main types of wave patterns that are associated with specific behavioral disorders.
Wave patterns can be condensed with mathematical equations to assist neurologists and intensive care unit (ICU) clinicians without a neurology background to identify subtle changes associated with disorders. The accumulated data can be presented in various formats such as density spectral array (DSA), spectral edge frequency (SEF) and median power frequency (MPF).
