imgix Announces Enhanced Service in Brazil

Sao Paulo is the latest in an expansion bringing advanced image processing to countries across the globe

SAN FRANCISCO--()--imgix, the leading provider of on-demand image processing for websites and mobile apps, today announced enhanced service in Brazil with a new edge node located in Sao Paulo, Brazil. This new edge node joins recent additions in Dubai, Madrid, Paris, Johannesburg, Montreal and Toronto, improving speed and reliability of the image optimization and delivery service in those regions. imgix now maintains a delivery presence at 33 edge locations in 16 countries worldwide, with more to come.

“Creating a truly global image processor is something that is very important to us,” said imgix CEO Chris Zacharias. “It is a connected world. Today chances are good your users are not just in your home country, but worldwide—in South America, in Europe, in Asia. We think that you should be able to provide the same great experience to everyone, no matter where they live.”

Although physical distance is just one factor in network response times, performance is often best when data is served from a nearby location. By serving images from an edge node in a given region, imgix ensures better performance for users in that region. During testing, imgix observed a 3x reduction in time-to-first-byte and as much as 5x increased throughput for many Brazilian markets. Results will vary depending on end user connectivity, site specific design decisions and other localized factors.

The addition of the Sao Paulo node positions imgix for expansion in Brazil, one of the hottest emerging technology markets in the world. In 2016 Brazil saw $279 million in venture capital investment, 56 percent of all capital invested in South America, according to the Latin American Private Equity and Venture Capital Association.
