Steve Risser Named Battelle’s Inventor of the Year

COLUMBUS, Ohio--()--In Steve Risser’s impressive career at Battelle that began in 1999, the Research Leader has been involved with an impressive array of scientific pursuits. This year, Risser is recognized not only as Battelle’s Inventor of the Year, but the number of patents he’s earned also qualify him as a Battelle Distinguished Inventor.

The award represents an acknowledgement of Risser’s personal technical contributions, team participation and mentorship. He has worked on 250 projects, led and supported five strategic initiatives, helped spin off a company and assisted in monetizing close to a dozen inventions.

Risser holds a PhD in physics from Kent State University and his specialty expert status in advanced materials has given rise to research experience in such diverse fields as medical devices, energy storage, photovoltaics and protective equipment. That and his specific technical focus on electromagnetics, electrochemical properties and biomolecular interfaces has earned him 17 patents – and he has another 17 patent applications pending. Plus, he’s produced 72 Intellectual Property Disclosure Records.

Because he received his 17th patent this year, Risser also earns the Battelle gold medal befitting a Distinguished Inventor, a status bestowed upon fewer than 100 other scientists. Each of his patents have focused on the development of new materials, or the application of these materials, into new devices to improve performance or new functions for defense, medical or industrial clients.

“Steve is known for his creative problem solving skills and is often involved in proposing or developing innovative technical concepts for challenging technical problems,” said Battelle President and CEO Jeff Wadsworth. “Battelle is a better place for having someone of his caliber dedicate a career to the pursuit of using science to benefit society.”
