PrescribeWellness Survey: Two in Three Americans Worried About Losing Healthcare

Americans feel government should do more to keep cost of prescription drugs down and rely on neighborhood pharmacies for preventive care, immunizations

IRVINE, Calif.--()--PrescribeWellness, the cloud-based services company whose mission is to inspire collaboration for better health, today announced the results of its 2017 Healthcare in America Survey. The survey, which was conducted by Propeller Insights on behalf of PrescribeWellness and fielded to 1,000 American adults 35+, gauged Americans’ current concerns about healthcare and their feelings about neighborhood pharmacies.

Cost of prescription drugs on the minds of Americans

Fully 80 percent of Americans over the age of 35 are feeling concerned about healthcare, with the cost of prescriptions being the biggest concern. Close to half (44 percent) feel the government is not doing enough to keep the cost of prescription medications down.

Americans’ other top healthcare concerns include:

  • Losing access to reliable, affordable healthcare (35 percent) or losing current healthcare benefits (29 percent) due to recent political changes
  • Not having enough money to cover medical bills—32 percent
  • Personal or family struggles with weight management—25 percent
  • Personal or family struggles with diabetes—20 percent
  • Personal or family struggles with quitting smoking—12 percent

Neighborhood pharmacies poised to help

The survey also revealed that while many Americans prefer visiting their local pharmacy to visiting their doctor’s office—62 percent, in fact—many are unaware of the full range of services available to them there.

Most Americans know their local pharmacies offer blood pressure checks (63 percent), medication consultation (51 percent) and shingles vaccinations (45 percent).

However, fewer were aware of some of the most important services on offer at their local pharmacies, such as:

  • Medication delivery—33 percent
  • Diabetes management—20 percent
  • Medication synchronization—20 percent
  • Help with smoking cessation—19 percent
  • Weight loss management—14 percent
  • Medication therapy management—10 percent

More than half of Americans (55 percent) said they prefer to be immunized at their local pharmacies instead of at the doctor’s office, including 28 percent of parents, who enjoy the convenience of getting the whole family immunized at once.

“The survey findings are consistent with what we are hearing from community pharmacists,” said Al Babbington, CEO of PrescribeWellness. “Americans are very concerned about the health of their families and their own health. They recognize the importance of preventive healthcare such as immunizations, and they value both convenience and affordability. As we continue to experience the healthcare delivery revolution, companies in the healthcare industry should be mindful of what patients care about most.”
