According to federal and state health officials, Mississippi has been one of the states hardest hit by the nation’s opioid scourge. The Mississippi Department of Health has reported that opioid prescriptions now outnumber citizens with an average of 1.2 prescriptions for every man, woman and child in the state, one of the highest rates in the country. Today, drug overdoses lead to almost 40 percent more deaths than motor vehicle accidents and opioids are the leading cause. Mississippi had 336 deaths in 2014, according to the Centers of Disease Control, representing a 7 percent increase over the prior year. However, this number may be much lower than the real figure. According to the former Mississippi State Medical Association, many overdose deaths are not counted because autopsies are rarely done in drug overdose cases.

“New Season is dedicated to helping individuals and families struggling with opioid addiction rebuild lives in a safe, private environment. Our vision is to be an integral part of strengthening community wellness and we are pleased to now be offering our services in Mississippi where such a great need exists,” said Fran Bolden, Operations Director for New Season.
