SidekickHealth and Jenny Craig Join Forces to Create Employee Wellness Program Targeting Millions At-Risk for Diabetes

PALO ALTO, Calif.--()--Jenny Craig and SidekickHealth have joined together to help thousands of individuals across the United States identify their risk for diabetes and take action toward building a healthier lifestyle.

Participants in the SidekickHealth Employee Wellness Program will participate in wellness challenges that educate them about prediabetes as well as provide them with incentives for starting their wellness journey. Participants will be referred to Jenny Craig’s comprehensive and structured weight loss program, which provides nutritionally-balanced menus (including nearly 100 delicious entrees, desserts and snacks developed by dietitians, nutritionists and food technologists), along with one-on-one support from a personal consultant.

Prediabetes affects 86 million American adults, and nine out of 10 are unaware that they have it. It is a serious medical condition that can increase a person's risk for developing type 2 diabetes, as well as diabetes-related conditions such as heart disease and stroke. The SidekickHealth Employee Wellness Program highlights Jenny Craig’s recognition as a provider of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) National Diabetes Prevention Program (NDPP), while providing a fun way for organizations to engage thousands of individuals through overall wellness competitions.

SidekickHealth, co-founded by physician and epidemiologist Tryggvi Thorgeirsson, has been used with great success by CDC Diabetes Prevention Programs and large global employers. The SidekickHealth platform supports in-person lifestyle-disease programs, like the CDC DPP, as well as with the ability to engage with thousands of individuals in three-week long health challenges and competitions at the workplace. The goals of the SidekickHealth program are to increase adoption of healthy behaviors and overall wellness, while screening for prediabetes within the mobile app. Incorporating behavioral economics into the platform, SidekickHealth is empowering organizations with the ability to incentivize their employees with prizes and rewards, including meals, activity monitors and charitable donations.

The Jenny Craig program is designed to teach members how to achieve healthy weight loss and weight maintenance by incorporating structured, nutritionally-balanced menus, physical activity and behavioral counseling delivered through weekly one-on-one consultations with a personal consultant. Members will learn how to eat healthy, get active and lose weight to help prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes. Based on the CDC standards, members will focus on two goals to reduce diabetes risk: losing at least five percent of weight through healthier eating, and building up to 150 minutes of moderate physical activity per week.

About SidekickHealth

SidekickHealth was founded by two practicing physicians, Tryggvi “Thor” Thorgeirsson, M.D., M.P.H. and Saemundur “Sam” Oddsson, M.D., to predict and prevent lifestyle-related diseases. Recognizing that traditional methods of counseling for lifestyle change were not effective enough to bring about the massive shift that is needed to reverse the global epidemic of chronic illness, these two founders brought together a team of physicians, psychologists, public health scientists, biomedical engineers, and game developers and drew on the latest research from leading academic and medical institutions in the U.S. and Europe. The result is SidekickHealth, a highly engaging, gamified service and app featuring programs for diet, physical activity and stress management. The platform is designed to reach those who are in greatest need of lifestyle change, including the 50 percent of adults who have low health literacy, and people with low motivation for lifestyle change. SidekickHealth also helps diabetes prevention programs and chronic disease management programs lower operational costs, improve outcomes, and increase value-based reimbursements.
