BEIJING--(BUSINESS WIRE)--On February 8th, reports emerged that Facebook had sent an email to multiple Chinese advertising agents asking them to temporarily stop showing ads for all Chinese utility apps on Facebook.
Following the report, numerous misconceptions have been reported regarding how Cheetah Mobile acquires its overseas users and its monetization practices. The following statement is an attempt to clear up the misconceptions.
- This action only means a temporary halt to the acquisition of users by Chinese utility apps, but it does not affect the ability of utility apps to monetize through Facebook. Cheetah Mobile is a top traffic contributor to Facebook and an important strategic partner of Facebook's mobile advertising platform. We have a very positive cooperative relationship with the Facebook team, and we will continue to work together to jointly expand the mobile advertising market.
- Organic installs make up the vast majority of Cheetah Mobile’s installs. Cheetah Mobile currently utilizes a comprehensive and diversified user acquisition model. We promote our products through multiple channels, and any single channel, including Facebook, only accounts for less than 10% of our external promotional volume. Therefore, Facebook’s action has limited effect on Cheetah Mobile’s overseas user acquisitions. In fact, banning the malicious promotional activities of competitors will only make users more willing to put their trust in reputable companies like Cheetah Mobile.
- We are pleased to see Facebook take this action. Cheetah Mobile, as China’s leading mobile internet company overseas, is committed to fighting malicious promotional activities and deceptive advertising together with Facebook and other Chinese internet companies. We support regulating the market in order to build a healthy internet environment. Facebook’s action will help remarkably reduce unfair competition in the mobile advertising market and reinforce Cheetah Mobile’s leading position overseas.
