Seton Medical Center Announces Orthopedic Medical Director

Dr. John H. Velyvis Spearheading New Robotic-Assisted Surgery Program

DALY CITY, Calif.--()--John H. Velyvis, MD, has been appointed Medical Director of Robotic Orthopedic Surgery at Seton Medical Center in Daly City. Seton is the only hospital in the Bay Area offering robotic-assisted total knee replacement using the NAVIO® Surgical System advanced technology.

Dr. Velyvis is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon with more than a dozen years of hospital experience. A leading expert on minimally invasive robotic-assisted knee surgery, he has successfully completed over 800 robotic-assisted procedures. At Seton, Dr. Velyvis performs both robotic-assisted partial and total knee replacements using the NAVIO System—a CT free, breakthrough technology that delivers consistent and precise results for patients, crucial to the long term success of knee replacement procedures. The NAVIO System represents a significant investment to bring new technology to the hospital.

According to CEO John Ferrelli, “NAVIO is a great example of the type of strategic capital expenditure Seton is making to ensure we continue to offer the best care possible to the communities we serve. We are honored to welcome an orthopedic surgeon with Dr. Velyvis’ exceptional talent in robotic technology to our healthcare team.”

Dr. Velyvis, who began his medical career at Massachusetts General Hospital—the largest and oldest teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School—has since helped to establish and launch robotic systems throughout the country. He also has published and lectured extensively on joint replacement topics within the field of orthopedics.

Dr. Velyvis received his undergraduate degree in biomedical engineering from Harvard University and his medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York. He later completed a residency in orthopedic surgery at Albany Medical Center and fellowship training at Massachusetts General Hospital, specializing in knee and hip surgery.

One of the most practiced surgeons on the West Coast using robotic-assisted technology, Dr. Velyvis is passionate about offering patients the most advanced surgical techniques available. “Helping patients get their lives back as quickly as possible is my top priority,” said Velyvis. “I am excited that Seton has invited me to lead their Robotic Orthopedic Surgery program, and look forward to making this incredible technology available to the communities we serve.”

Dr. Velyvis will present a free seminar for the public on the causes and treatment of knee pain on Feb. 16 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at The Westin San Francisco Bayshore Room located at 1 Old Bayshore Highway in Millbrae. The talk will include a special introduction to robotic-assisted total knee replacement using the NAVIO Surgical System.
