Cigna CEO David Cordani Announces Major Contributions to Go Healthy Houston Efforts

  • Cigna Health Improvement Tour free health screenings this week
  • $75,000 Cigna Foundation grant to Houston Health Foundation for diabetes program
  • $50,000 Cigna Foundation grant to Recipe for Success for childhood obesity

HOUSTON & BLOOMFIELD, Conn.--()--Cigna (NYSE: CI) CEO and President David Cordani announced today at Houston City Hall that the Cigna Health Improvement Tour is offering free health screenings in Houston this week, all part of helping Houstonians start the new year on a healthy note. Cordani also announced two large grants from the Cigna Foundation – one to the Houston Health Foundation for the Diabetes Awareness and Wellness Network (DAWN), and another to Recipe for Success, which focuses on childhood obesity.

Cordani met with Faith Foreman, Ph.D, Asst. Director, Houston Health Department and Jane Cheeks, Director, Houston Human Resources, along with several City Council and community members to deliver the positive news that aligns with the goals of Go Healthy Houston. http://gohealthyhouston.org/).

“As a society, we need to continue finding ways to emphasize health care over sick care – by helping people take greater, personal control of their health. This has factored significantly into our partnership with the City of Houston,” Cordani said. “Cigna has a longstanding commitment to Houston through providing health coverage to the city’s employees and we are proud of the health results we have achieved together."

The free health screenings in Houston, made possible by funding from the Cordani Family Foundation and arranged through the Cigna Foundation, will provide screenings for blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol and BMI – the four key numbers that underlie most chronic disease and health care costs. Screenings took place Tuesday at the D. Bradley McWilliams YMCA at Cypress Creek, and will be offered today at the Monty Ballard YMCA, 22807 Westheimer Parkway, Katy, Texas; and Thursday at the Denver Harbor Multi-Service Center, 6402 Market St., Houston.

The Cigna Foundation grant to DAWN will enable DAWN to develop a nutrition education room that will serve as a nutrition education hub, a mock grocery store, and a comprehensive nutrition education library for those living with, or at-risk, for diabetes. The $50,000 Cigna Foundation grant to Recipe for Success will support nutrition education programs to allow for continued development, growth and expansion of the Seed-to-Plate Nutrition Education in schools throughout Houston, as well as the implementation of farmer training and nutrition education programs at Hope Farms.

“Cigna has a long history of support for Houston’s health, which includes sponsoring the annual Cigna Sunday Streets, when streets are closed six times a year to allow residents to take part in walking and fitness activities,” said Mike Koehler, president for Cigna in Houston. “Cigna looks forward to continuing to work with Houston to meet its health and wellness goals.”
