O3b Networks and Digicel Provide High Performance Broadband to Support Green Climate Fund Meeting in Samoa

Dignitaries from 24 countries will enjoy seamless online communications from Pacific Island

ST. HELIER, Jersey--()--O3b Networks today announced an agreement with Digicel to boost broadband capacity to support the Green Climate Fund (GCF) Convention & Board Meeting, being held in Apia, Samoa from Sunday, 11 December – Thursday, 15 December.

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change created GCF to advance a global response to climate change, and to mobilise funding for low-emission and climate-resilient development. GCF is a unique global initiative, governed by an independent board of 24 members that represent 12 developed and 12 developing countries. To date, the GCF board has raised more than $10 Billion USD to fund investments in both mitigation and adaptation that support the goal of keeping Earth’s temperature increase below two degrees Celsius.

GCF mandates 280Mbps of dedicated bandwidth for meetings to support 360 participants. In order for Samoa to meet those requirements, government officials worked with Digicel and O3b to provide surge capacity for this important event.

O3b first provided Digicel, the leading communications operator in Samoa, with high-throughput, low-latency satellite-enabled connectivity more than two years ago. Since then, demand for the service has grown substantially and Digicel Samoa has worked with O3b to scale up link capacities, nearly doubling its contracted capacity in response.

“Today, six Pacific Island countries have received $1.3 Million USD through The Green Climate Fund’s Readiness and Precatory Support Program,” said Yvonne Steele, Digicel Regional CEO. “Allocating these funds to island nations who don’t have the resources to support climate change initiatives independently demonstrates a commitment to improving the global response to this important issue. Digicel is very pleased to support Samoa in hosting this group of dignitaries and providing the connectivity necessary for them to carry out their important work.”

“The Green Climate Fund is a massively important organisation that has already made significant strides towards impacting the global response to climate change,” said Imran Malik, VP of Asia Pacific, O3b Networks. “This meeting will be a unique chance for GCF Board members to see first-hand the climate needs and opportunities in the Pacific. O3b is honoured to assist in this effort by surging capacity in Samoa, providing the connectivity necessary for members of this organisation to carry out their important work.”
