Ooma Introduces Internet Security to Make Home Networks Safer and More Secure

Ooma Internet Security features threat-blocking capabilities from Zscaler designed to protect families from internet perils and unwanted content on all devices on the home network.

PALO ALTO, Calif.--()--Ooma, Inc. (NYSE:OOMA), a smart communications platform for small businesses and consumers, today introduced Ooma Internet Security powered by Zscaler, a robust, cloud-based internet security service that protects all devices connected to the home network. Ooma Internet Security provides unmatched security and threat detection by blocking viruses, malware and phishing attempts triggered by browsing the internet. It also provides users the choice to block many categories of potentially objectionable web content.

Delivered using Zscaler’s DNS-based cloud security platform that is updated thousands of times per day, Ooma Internet Security is easy to set up and provides highly effective, up-to-date protection from internet threats throughout the home without the need to manage individual devices. Ooma Internet Security protects any device that accesses the web from the home network, including Mac and PC computers as well as iOS and Android tablets and mobile phones.

“As part of our mission to create robust communications experiences, we are leveraging our cloud-based platform to enhance other connected services and devices in the home,” said Eric Stang, CEO of Ooma. “Internet security is a logical extension to our Ooma phone service, giving families affordable, powerful protection from threats for an unlimited number of devices.”

A 2015 study by Common Sense, an independent nonprofit organization, found that American children ages 8 and older consume between six to nine hours of media content daily, not including school use or homework. Ooma Internet Security provides parents peace of mind, knowing their families have up-to-date protection against a multitude of threats. Ooma Internet Security’s key features for families include:

  • Threat blocking: blocks access to websites that may contain viruses, spyware, malware or other internet threats.
  • Content filtering: restrict access to inappropriate or objectionable websites using predefined categories.
  • Customizable rules: create a custom list of sites to allow or block, and grant access to sites in real-time based on requests from users within the home.
  • Safe search: actively enforce safe search mode on Google, Yahoo and Bing search engines.

"Ooma Internet Security is an important and much-needed step forward in providing a secure browsing experience to consumers,” said Punit Minocha, vice president of business development at Zscaler. “Security threats are becoming more prevalent, as consumers are targeted by malware, ransomware and other threats. With Ooma Internet Security powered by Zscaler, Ooma customers are protected from internet threats and can take advantage of valuable parental controls to safeguard their entire family with cloud-based security.”

Ooma Internet Security is a firmware upgrade that is rolling out to Ooma Telo users in the United States and Canada.
