Top 5 Vendors in the Wireless Access Point Market from 2016 to 2020: Technavio

LONDON--()--Technavio has announced the top five leading vendors in their recent global wireless access point market report. This research report also lists 12 other prominent vendors that are expected to impact the market during the forecast period.

In 2002, Wi-Fi networks started to gain attention with its ability to offer wireless connectivity, but its adoption by consumers and enterprises was slow and minimal, as users rarely had more than one wireless connected device. However, the proliferation of connected devices such as mobile computing devices (smartphones, PCs, and tablets); media players (smart set-top boxes and smart TVs) and gaming consoles; smart home appliances; and wearables (smart watches, smart bands, smart glasses, and smart clothing) has made Wi-Fi an absolute necessity in offices and public places.

Competitive vendor landscape

In 2015, the vendors generated revenue of USD 5.07 billion from the sale of gateways and routers as compared to the revenues of USD 4.48 billion and USD 0.34 billion from the sale of dependent and independent APs respectively. The gateways and routers are also sold through mobile telecom operators such as AT&T and Verizon. Therefore, mobile telecom operators depend mostly on AP manufacturers to increase their revenues from LTE technologies. This increases the bargaining power of WLAN AP manufacturers. Also, there are intense price wars among device manufacturers to win orders from telecom operators.

Vendors in the market are aiming to optimize the IoT revolution. Vendors from different industries are investing in smart devices, integrating advanced electronic components such as 802.11ac chip on consumer electronic devices. A large amount of data collected from connected devices enable vendors to improve customer and partner assistance and support,” says Abhishek Sharma, a lead M2M and connected devices analyst from Technavio.

The increase in IP traffic and higher adoption of mobile computing devices are driving the deployment of WLAN solutions. This is because users use their mobile computing devices for sending emails, watching online video content, sending text messages, and transferring files and documents. These high bandwidth applications require high data transfer rate that is possible with Wi-Fi technology.
