NCATS/NIH Shares Experts’ Best Practices on Reproducibility and Robust Assay Design

MADISON, Wis.--()--Promega Corporation is pleased to host the Assay Guidance Workshop for High Throughput Screening and Lead Discovery on Thursday, October 27, 2016 in Madison, Wisconsin. The workshop is organized by the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences, a center of the National Institutes of Health (NCATS/NIH). The objective of the Assay Guidance Manual training workshops is to share best practices and advice on robust assay design and development for researchers new to the drug discovery process.

The Assay Guidance Workshop will cover critical concepts underlying assay development for high throughput screening and lead discovery, including the issue of reproducibility. Many of the workshop instructors have 20-30 years of experience in the field of drug discovery. The successful methodologies are derived from years of experts’ practical solutions in assay design within the pharmaceutical industry, which until recently were not readily found in a classroom or the literature.

“NCATS is pleased to offer the assay guidance workshop in collaboration with Promega Corporation to help researchers learn the ins and outs of early-stage drug development,” said NCATS Director Christopher P. Austin. “Our goal in developing and disseminating this information is to improve the robustness of the drug discovery process, and in so doing help get more treatments to more patients more quickly.”

Prior workshops were held at NCATS, the US Food and Drug Administration, and the annual 2015 Society for Laboratory Automation and Screening conference. The 2016 workshop will be held on October 27 in the Feynman Center on the Promega campus, immediately following the International Chemical Biology Society (ICBS) 2016 conference. The Fifth Annual ICBS Conference will be held October 24-26, 2016 and will be hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The theme of the ICBS conference is translational chemical biology.

NCATS/NIH publishes the Assay Guidance Manual, a free eBook that is an important resource for detailed information about robust assay methods and best practices in quantitative biology. NCATS manages the content of the manual with input from industry, academia and government experts, including some of the workshop instructors. More than 100 authors from around the world have contributed content to the eBook, which is updated quarterly and housed by the National Library of Medicine. Promega scientists have contributed to the eBook and the company is proud to host the 2016 Workshop.
