In the First Half of 2016, Vestas Led All Wind Turbine Vendors in Orders Received, According to Navigant Research

Europe remains the regional leader in terms of turbine capacity awarded during the first six months of 2016, report finds

BOULDER, Colo.--()--A new report from Navigant Research tracks all publicly announced wind turbine orders between January and June 2016, providing details on orders placed by region, country, and vendor, as well as a breakdown of the vendor market of the top countries.

The market for wind energy continues to grow, and in the last six months, an increasing amount of turbine deals have been announced compared to the second half of 2015. During the first six months of 2016, global wind turbine orders from 11 vendors in 29 countries totaled nearly 13.5 GW, with Vestas overtaking Siemens as the top vendor. Click to Tweet: According to a new report from @NavigantRSRCH, Vestas led all vendors in turbine orders received in the first half of 2016 with 3.5 GW of awarded capacity.

“Danish manufacturer Vestas showcased its market reach once again during the first half of 2016 by signing deals in at least 16 different countries across the globe,” says Adam Wilson, research associate with Navigant Research. “Competitors Siemens, Gamesa, General Electric, and Suzlon rounded out the top five vendors, with Suzlon more than tripling its capacity awarded in the first half of 2016 compared to the second half of 2015.”

In terms of turbine capacity awarded to regions, Europe retained its leading position in the first half of 2016, gaining 6 GW from a handful of large offshore orders and a massive Norwegian project awarded to Vestas, according to the report. North America and Asia Pacific continued to trail Europe, while Latin America saw a decline in capacity and the Middle East & Africa, taking fifth place, saw an increase.

The report, Wind Turbine Order Tracker 3Q16, tracks all publicly announced wind turbine orders between January and June 2016. The study provides an examination of orders placed by region, country, and vendor, as well as a breakdown of the vendor market of the top countries. An analysis of turbine technologies such as rotor diameter, turbine rating, and specific power is also presented. The report offers a comparison of the offshore and onshore wind markets, as well. Note that this Tracker excludes orders for the Chinese market due to the opaque state of order reporting in that market. An Executive Summary of the report is available for free download on the Navigant Research website.
