AmeriHealth Caritas Awarded Contract and Selected to Participate in Pennsylvania’s First-Ever Managed Long Term Services and Supports Program

The company will expand home- and community-based programs, increasing efficiency and access to quality care and services

PHILADELPHIA--()--AmeriHealth Caritas announced today that it has been notified by Pennsylvania’s Department of Human Services (DHS) of its intent to contract with AmeriHealth Caritas to provide managed long term services and supports (MLTSS) statewide in all 67 Pennsylvania counties under the Community HealthChoices program. The contract will begin July 1, 2017, with a phased approach based on zones.

Community HealthChoices is Pennsylvania’s MLTSS program for Pennsylvanians who are elderly, disabled or qualify for both Medicaid and Medicare (dual eligibles). The program is expected to serve approximately 420,000 Pennsylvanians.

We are excited about this opportunity to expand our business in our home state and work with DHS to provide care and services to members in the Community HealthChoices program,” said Paul A. Tufano, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of AmeriHealth Caritas. “Core to our mission is that every individual should have access to health care, and for more than 30 years we have been working in communities across the Commonwealth, as well as the nation, to make that possible. This new program expands home- and community-based services to Pennsylvanians in need, ensuring they receive the supports necessary to remain in their homes and communities through our person-centered model of care.”

AmeriHealth Caritas provides an integrated model of care, which focuses on high family and caregiver involvement, high-touch interactivity, community-based services, successful care transitions and intensive case management. The plan covers nursing facilities, home- and community-based services, and alternative residential settings along the continuum of care. Members also have access to non-traditional services, such as home-delivered meals, home modification, pest control and emergency response systems, all designed to focus on supporting individuals in their homes, rather than an institutional setting.

AmeriHealth Caritas has participated in Pennsylvania’s HealthChoices Medical Assistance (Medicaid) managed care program since its inception in 1997. In addition to Pennsylvania, AmeriHealth Caritas provides full-risk integrated Medicaid managed care services in Florida, Iowa, Louisiana, Michigan, Nebraska, South Carolina and the District of Columbia. AmeriHealth Caritas also serves dual eligibles in Michigan, Pennsylvania and South Carolina through Medicare Advantage Special Needs Plans and Medicare-Medicaid Plans.
