New Leaf Africa Enters Volunteer Carbon Market, Bringing Them One Step Closer to Gold Standard Certification

WASHINGTON--()--New Leaf Africa (NLA), leaders in sustainable technology, population health and renewable energy, is one step closer in earning the esteemed Gold Standard Certification for their sustainable development programs in Africa for Project Blue, a large-scale, voluntary project activity conducted by New Leaf Africa in the Republic of Guinea. The project activity intends to bring environmentally sustainable, clean water to approximately 2.5 Million people in rural Guinea by distributing over 500,000, medical-grade, water filtration systems that require no energy or moving parts.

The Gold Standard is the standard of choice for governments, multinationals and the United Nations and the only certification standard trusted and endorsed by more than 80 NGOs worldwide.

In October 2015, New Leaf Africa posted the Local Stakeholder Consultation Report (LSCR) for Project Blue on the Gold Standard.

“This was an important step for New Leaf Africa,” said Michael Keister, co-founder of New Leaf Africa. This listing signals NLA’s commitment to provide corporations, looking for carbon offset investment, the best opportunities to support sustainable solutions in developing nations. This means higher investor confidence, greater access to carbon finance and better results for reliant communities.”

In July 2016, New Leaf Africa submitted the Passport and Project Design Documents on Project Blue, thus completing phase 1 of the Gold Standard certification process.

The completion of this phase lays the groundwork for the validation phase. New Leaf Africa has engaged Carbon Check (India) as the DOE (Designated Operational Entity) for this process. Carbon Check will validate the content of the submitted documents in phase 1. New Leaf Africa estimates that the validation phase should be completed within 8 weeks from the estimated start date of September 1, 2016.

“We are using our programs to partner with tribal nations to educate their communities on the importance of sustainability and preserving their own precious, natural resources which improves their quality of life,” said Keister. “At the same time, we are providing corporations with a CSR vehicle to offset their impact on the environment, exhibit leadership and promote environmental stewardship.”

“This designation brings great credibility to the carbon markets. The team at New Leaf Africa is committed to completing the certification process and its work with Carbon Check,” added Keister. “Once the validation phase is complete, the carbon credits can then be listed on the exchanges for sale in order to fund the project.”
