Dollar General Announces Store Construction in North Dakota

Completion of North Dakota stores will give one of country’s leading discount retailers a presence in 44 states

GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn.--()--Dollar General (NYSE: DG) today announced construction of five new stores in southeastern North Dakota. The stores are expected to celebrate grand openings in spring 2017 and when completed, will expand the company’s presence to 44 states across the country.

“Expanding our footprint into North Dakota provides Dollar General an opportunity to not only deliver value and convenience to additional customers in the upper Midwest, but to also serve communities through our mission of Serving Others,” said Todd Vasos, Dollar General’s chief executive officer. “Meeting our customers’ needs is our top priority when choosing store locations and we look forward to being a long-standing business partner in the state, as well as welcoming new customers into our stores when these projects are completed next spring.”

Stores are currently under construction in the following locations:

  • Highway One at Cedar Street in Oakes, North Dakota (Dickey County)
  • 705 First Avenue South in Ellendale, North Dakota (Dickey County)
  • 601 Sixth Street Southeast in Hankinson, North Dakota (Richland County)
  • 507 West Caledonia in Hillsboro, North Dakota (Traill County)
  • 8179 Highway 32 in Gwinner, North Dakota (Sargent County)

These five stores will offer customers the traditional Dollar General store format, which is approximately 9,100 total building square footage and 7,400 sales floor square footage. The stores’ layout provides a customer-friendly format with fast checkout, as seasonal products are displayed in the center of the stores, departments are easily recognizable with visible signage and coolers are conveniently located at the front of the stores. Construction began on all five stores this summer.

Dollar General stores offer convenience and value to customers by providing a focused selection of items including food, cleaning supplies, apparel, paper products, health and beauty items, pet needs, home décor and toys from America’s most trusted brands and Dollar General’s private brands. The company further demonstrates its commitment to the affordability needs of customers by pricing more than 80 percent of items at $5 or less.

Dollar General plans to identify additional areas for new store growth in the state. Dollar General most recently expanded from stores in 40 states to 43 states with the grand opening of stores in Maine, Rhode Island and Oregon in March 2015.

In addition to customer convenience, Dollar General typically takes demographics, competitive analyses and traffic patterns, among other factors, into consideration when determining new store locations.

With over 13,000 retail locations and 119,000 employees, Dollar General offers its employees opportunities to start and/or grow their careers. Each store is expected to employ approximately six to 10 employees, depending on the individual needs of the store. Dollar General provides its customers more than everyday low prices on basic merchandise as part of its mission of Serving Others. Dollar General is deeply involved in the communities it serves and is an ardent supporter of literacy and education through the Dollar General Literacy Foundation, which awards approximately $12 million each year to nonprofit organizations, schools and libraries within a 20-mile radius of a Dollar General store or distribution center to support adult, family, summer and youth literacy programs.

At the cash register of every Dollar General store, customers interested in learning how to read, speak English or earn their General Education Diploma (GED) can pick up a brochure with a postage-paid reply card that can be mailed in for a referral to a local organization that offers free literacy services. Since its inception in 1993, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation has awarded more than $120 million in grants to nonprofit organizations, helping more than 7.3 million individuals take their first steps toward literacy or continued education.
