Technavio Announces Top Four Emerging Trends Impacting the Global CAD Market in the Apparel Industry until 2020

LONDON--()--Technavio’s latest report on the global CAD market in the apparel industry provides an analysis on the most important trends expected to impact the market outlook from 2016-2020. Technavio defines an emerging trend as a factor that has the potential to significantly impact the market and contribute to its growth or decline.

Amrita Choudhury, lead analyst from Technavio, specializing in research on product lifecycle management (PLM) sector, says, “The M&A in the global CAD market are likely to increase with large companies acquiring medium and small software companies in a bid to boost their global footprint. For instance, Siemens acquired Unigraphics in 2007 to enter the global CAD market and started selling NX software for product design. The global CAD market is likely to phase out the perpetual CAD licenses by 2016 and shift toward periodic CAD subscription/licenses.”

The top four emerging trends driving the global CAD market in the apparel industry according to Technavio ICT research analysts are:

  • Increasing shift to subscription model
  • Rising shift toward 4D models
  • Increasing adoption of synchronous technology
  • Rising use of 3D printer in CAD

Increasing shift to subscription model

In 2016, Autodesk will stop providing perpetual CAD licenses and focus more on subscriptions as they are expected to provide higher revenues for end-users.

According to the calculations by Technavio’s analyst, the adoption of AutoCAD LT on subscription generates USD 320-USD 350 per year on an average, as compared with a perpetual license, which generates USD 250-USD 260 per year. The high return on investment on subscriptions will decrease the demand for perpetual CAD licenses, which are eventually expected to phase out.

Rising shift toward 4D models

“With globalization, there is increased competition among CAD solution vendors to gain the maximum market share. CAD vendors are facing increased competition because of lack of product differentiation. This has prompted many vendors to incorporate additional features and functionalities into their solutions to attain superior capabilities. CAD vendors are developing 4D CAD solutions that will enable increased operational performance. This improves the project execution strategy, leading to better execution and sequencing of construction schedules with granular level information. Thus, the effective deployment of 4D CAD solutions will enable effective manageability of resources, while meeting the project schedules,” says Amrita.

Increasing adoption of synchronous technology

The synchronous technology provides proper control and immediate feedback of the model designed, thereby making the work easier for suppliers, engineers, and designers. The designing requires less preplanning and fewer command codes, making the process faster than previous modeling systems. In addition, the requirement for remodeling is comparatively lesser in synchronous technology. Unlike conventional history-based models, synchronous technology does not require the detailed history of a model (history of model includes how that model was created by the previous designer and what specifications were given at the model designing time). Simple options such as "pick and drag" with real-time dynamic updating help make the change happen easily.

“Increased level of interoperability is another major factor that will make synchronous technology more prominent in the future. For instance, Siemens PLM Software consists of a number of sub-models that are designed in other platforms such as CATIA. The exchange of models and data between different platforms is a major advantage of using the synchronous technology,” adds Amrita.

Rising use of 3D printer in CAD

The global 3D printer market was valued at USD 1.19 billion in 2014 and will reach USD 6.95 billion by 2019, growing at a CAGR of over 42%. 3D printers find an increased adoption across the manufacturing industry. Models are created through CAD software such as SolidWorks 2015, which has an output directly connected a 3D printer in a windows 8.1 environment, where the model is created physically. Companies such as GE, Boeing, and Pratt & Whitney are investing in this new technology. GE Aviation acquired Morris Technologies, a specialized engineering firm in advanced fabrication techniques and 3D printing applications in 2012. Boeing uses 3D printers to develop prototypes for plastic interior parts out of Ultem and nylon. With the increase in the adoption of 3D printers, the use of CAD software is mandatory for the model creation, fueling the demand for CAD globally from both original CAD providers and VARs
