InnovaCare Joins HHS Initiative to Reform Payment Models

FORT LEE, N.J.--()--Officials with InnovaCare, Inc., a leading Medicaid and Medicare Advantage organization providing healthcare-related services in Puerto Rico, are pleased to announce the organization’s participation in the Health Care Payment Learning and Action Network (LAN). The LAN is a public-private partnership that seeks to move the U.S. health system toward payment models based on quality rather than quantity.

As a LAN Committed Partner, InnovaCare supports the LAN’s mission to accelerate the transition to alternative payment models. InnovaCare has also established organizational goals in support of payment reform and will share progress with the LAN.

In a statement, the company said: “We support the LAN’s goals of tying 30 percent of U.S. health care payments to alternate payment methods (APMs) by 2016 and 50 percent by 2018. We commit to help measure progress toward these goals by participating in the LAN Nationwide Data Collection Effort. For our Medicaid and/or Medicare Advantage plans, we will participate in a quantitative data survey and categorize payments according to the APM Framework.”

“This announcement signifies our organization’s deep commitment to moving the healthcare industry forward,” said InnovaCare President and Chief Executive Officer Richard Shinto, M.D. “Joining these efforts reinforces InnovaCare’s mission of redefining healthcare management by providing patients with access to care that is coordinated, cost-effective, innovative and driven by quality. Payment reform is just one way we are working to build stronger patient-provider relationships within our networks.”

Launched by HHS in March 2015, the LAN was created to drive alignment in payment approaches across the public and private sectors of the U.S. health care system. The goal of this initiative is to move the health care system toward paying providers based on the quality, rather than the quantity, of care they give patients.

Its list of Committed Partners includes nearly 100 leading organizations from the private, public, and non-profit sectors working together to transform the nation’s health system to emphasize quality of care over quantity of services.

“LAN’s impressive list of Committed Partners consists of some of the top organizations from all corners of the industry coming together to find a way to make payment models work better for the organizations who depend on them,” said Penelope Kokkinides, InnovaCare’s Chief Administrative Officer. “By working alongside the other LAN Committed Partners, we are confident that we will be able to reach these important milestones and ultimately make a noticeable difference in the spread of APMs throughout our industry. This type of collaboration is exactly what the healthcare industry needs today, and we are proud to be a part of it.”

About Health Care Payment Learning and Action Network (LAN)

To help achieve better care, smarter spending, and healthier people, the LAN provides a platform for the private, public, and non-profit sectors to learn and share efforts to transform the nation’s health system to emphasize quality of care over quantity of services. HHS launched the LAN to help advance the work being done across sectors to increase the adoption of alternative payment models. For more information, please visit hcp-lan.org.

The LAN is about shifting away from the current fee-for-service model of payment in our health care system (where more services leads to higher payments, regardless of health outcome) to one that pays providers and hospitals for quality care and improved health.
