The Progress Common Component Specification Project Hits Major Milestones on First Anniversary

87 members representing 60 companies worldwide collaborate to create standard specifications for building high-productivity tools across multiple application frameworks

BEDFORD, Mass.--()--Progress (NASDAQ: PRGS) today announced significant momentum within the Common Component Specification (CCS) project. In August 2015, the CCS project was launched with the strategic goal of bringing the Progress® OpenEdge® platform community together to help build the future of business applications.

“We created the CCS community to enable choices between standards-based implementations of different components for our customers and partners and the OpenEdge platform community at large,” said Colleen Smith, Vice President and General Manager for Progress OpenEdge, Progress. “Thousands of our customers are working diligently on their own modernization and transformation efforts. We want to simplify that process and help them gain a competitive advantage with a series of readily available, components based on standards developed and approved by a community of experts."

The ultimate goal of the CCS project is to develop a standard set of specifications for various common components needed for building business applications of the future. By engaging the community, the group can collaborate and leverage best practices when creating these standards-based components and tools. Such collaboration will enable new levels of interoperability and flexibility for end users to swap components, based on merit, with minimal effort, resulting in greater efficiencies and effectiveness. It also alleviates component lock-in risk and grants OpenEdge application development customers the choice in collaborating with a variety of vendors that implement the standards.

In less than a year, the CCS has attracted a total of 87 members representing 60 companies. Member participants include: 1st Credit Ltd, Consultingwerk Ltd, DMSi, JK Technosoft, kantena, Kingslake, MIP Holdings, proALPHA, Progressive Consulting, QAD, TOTVS, Van Meijel and more.

In addition to attracting participants from a variety of regions and industries, the group has already completed its first specification, the CCS Architecture specification, which incorporates contributions from nine different community members from seven companies, and was reviewed by the entire community. The Architecture specification lays the technical groundwork for subsequent specifications; it defines a platform of specifications that can be used together, as well as the components and how they communicate with each other. The Architecture specification was unanimously approved by the CCS steering committee, a lengthy vetting process that requires initial submission, steering committee approval, creation of a specification team, specification development, community review, final proposal submission and final approval. In addition to Progress, the steering committee consists of representation from large ERP provider, proALPHA, strategic consulting partner, Consultingwerk and a leading US mortgage lender.

“We wanted to be a member of the CCS so we could participate in and influence the direction of these component specifications. We also wanted early access to the specifications in development, to share best practices and to expand our own connections within the OpenEdge platform community,” said Gunnar Schug, CCS steering committee member and Vice President of Development, proALPHA. “The last year has been a great opportunity for us to work side-by-side with our peers learning and collaborating on standard components that will undoubtedly help to shape the future of business applications in a very meaningful way.”

Two additional specifications (Startup Manager and Business Entity) are in community review, and several others are slated for completion by end of year.
